Klickitat County remembers its heroes

Rachel Cavanaugh
News Editor

Crowds gather over the weekend in Goldendale, Centerville, and the Stonehenge War Memorial to pay tribute to loved ones
Hundreds of residents turned out over the weekend throughout Klickitat County, from Bingen to Alderdale, to to honor troops killed in combat and the veterans who fought by their side.
At various cemeteries, mothers and fathers were seen placing flowers at the graves of their sons and daughters, while veterans - from World War II to the Iraqi War - saluted their slain comrades.
Goldendale’s American Legion sponsored memorial events at the IOOF Mt. View Cemetery, the Centerville Cemetery, and the Stonehenge War Memorial.
Others took the day to reflect or comment on the current war in Iraq, which reached its 4083 casualty.

Bluegrassers pick ‘n’ grin at the observatory

The 2008 Fiddlin’ Around the Stars Bluegrass Festival and Camp ‘n’ Jam, which kicked off this week, will run through Sunday, June 1, at the Goldendale Observatory.
The festival features performances by groups like Chickweed, Fiddlegrass, Hardshell Harmony, Ida Viper, Kathy Boyd, Phoenix Rising, Lee Highway, Prairie Flyer, and Whiskey Puppy.
Additionally, the observatory will host nightly stargazing events along with music, art, wine, and free camping.
Retired NASA astronaut Bonnie Dunbar has cancelled her appearance, but the Museum of Flight is arranging a replacement speaker.
NASA Ambassador Greg Cermak will give a slide presentation in the amphitheater Saturday titled: Organics on Titan, Water on Enceladus: Worlds of Possibilities for Life on Saturn’s Moons.
