GHS play, Room Service, opens this weekend at the Grange hall

Rachel Cavanaugh
News Editor

Goldendale High School’s Drama department will present a rollicking slap-stick farce at the Goldendale Grange beginning at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 15 and continuing on Nov. 21 and 22.
Room Service is the 1937 Broadway comedy by John Murray and Allen Boretz, which was later made into a film starring the famous comedy team of the Marx Brothers: Groucho, Chico, and Harpo.      Playing those roles are Jesse Robles, Lyssa Garcia, and Nathan Clark (who is not mute as is his Harpo counterpart in the film).
The play also stars a large cast including Mark Baker, Donnie Bellamy, Allysa Welch, Hannah Brokaw, Asa Israel, Conner Harris, Kyla Harness, Shawna Quantrell, and Nolan Bare.
It is a story of a producer’s attempt to fund a newcomer’s play off Broadway in the midst of The Great Depression when no one had money, starvation is a normal state for the unemployed in New York, and tempers flare when job security is threatened by con artists who call themselves dramatic artists.
Bodies found in the theatre, Russians posing as waiters, mooseheads blocking fire hydrants, and stolen meals from the service elevator create a zany evening of fun.
Tickets are being sold at the high school and at the door: $6 for adults; $5 for students and seniors.

Two businesses open in Goldendale

Two new businesses opened doors in Goldendale, one teaming up with an established business and the other bringing a totally unique service to area residents.
The first is Golden Photo Services, which is owned by Jeanne Morgan. Morgan opened doors at 112 Main St., in the former PAL center. The business is soon to be called Golden Photo and Art Frames, as Cindy Bleumel will join Morgan and leave her Art Frames business on the opposite side of Main St. The new partnership will offer art and photo supplies, print services, portrait photography, custom art framing, photo editing, enlargements and touchup as well as art and photo related classes. The new, combined store will open on Dec. 1.
The other business is a new idea for Goldendale, a self-serve dog wash. The Dog Wash opened last weekend at 1030 W. Broadway. The Dog Wash offers an alternative to wrestling with your pet in the bath tub, with shampoo and towels provided for a cost of $15 per animal. Owner Candy Magnuson’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday and Monday and Tuesday.

Doctor to speak on PTSD

A doctor and Vietnam veteran will speak this weekend in Hood River about his experiences in war and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Dr. John Fisher will appear Saturday, Nov. 15 in the Fireside Room of the Riverside Church, at 3:30 p.m.
The event is for veterans only. At 6 p.m., the public at large is invited to attend a community dinner served by the Mid-Columbia Unitarian Universalist Youth Group.
At 7 p.m., Dr. Fisher will lead a public discussion on PTSD and how communities can help those returning from the battle grounds.
Fisher lives in South Carolina and currently serves as the coordinator for the Colorado/Southwest Soldier’s Heart Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to creating veterans’ safe-return programs throughout the country.
Fisher served in the U.S. Army with the 4th Infantry Division, Vietnam, in 1968.
He discovered one of his most successful healing therapies to be writing, he said.
No admission is required, however, the Columbia Gorge Peace Fellowship and the National Soldier’s Heart Program are accepting donations.
