Carrying the art on
Kathy Baldwin is carrying on an artistic legacy.
Last March, her sister Teresa passed away after a long struggle with brain cancer. The woman had been an emerging photographer before her death and spent her last years, according to Kathy, “discovering nature through a macro lens.”
“Quickly welcoming her newfound love, she set to work shooting thousands of images,” Kathy recalled of her sister. “[She] learned to use a computer and edit her work, built three websites, had gallery showings, and her art enlarged, mounted, canvassed, and framed.”
Since then, has put time and energy into reprinting her sister’s images and has launched a website with cancer-related products the two of them developed while Teresa was still alive. The idea is for them to empower patients and their families. Kathy said she wants to “encourage other people to live with the same passion for life Teresa possessed.”
This month, the images captured by Teresa - known professionally as Terese Marie - are on display at the Golden Art Gallery in Goldendale.
Kathy said she encourages everybody to check them out to get a better idea of who her sister was.
“Teresa’s voice was loud and urgent,” she said. “She must have sensed her time here was short. So, like a seedpod that bursts open at the peak of summer to plant for next season’s joy, she cast her visions of the world for us to continue to enjoy....She left her love of life for us to appreciate in the form of her magnificent art.”

Skateboarders to offer free clinic
A group of skateboarders from Spokane and surrounding areas have organized a free skateboard clinic to take place at the Maryhill Loops in March.
The event will feature equipment demonstrations by professional skateboard instructors and assistance from other experienced athletes.
The group, known as the Maryhill Ratz and headed by longboarder Dean Ozuna, was in the Goldendale area last fall after the Festival of Speed to help raise money for fairground repairs.
“After the event, the Ratz would like to auction off the donated equipment and contribute the money to the City to start a fund to build a concrete skatepark in Goldendale,” said Ozuna. “It appears there is some local interest in such a project and we would like to get the ball rolling.
“We hope to be able to contribute about $2,000, depending on the amount of goods available for auction.”
Ozuna said many of the people involved in this project have worked before with groups to develop skateparks in other communities. However, he noted challenges in organizing and developing community support because they are not local.
The event will be held Friday, Mar. 27.
