Maryhill set to reopen
Maryhill Museum of Art coordinators are gearing up for the facility's reopening this weekend.
The season will kick off again Sunday, Mar. 15, with highlights including Hudson River School painters and work by photographer Ansel Adams.
The Hudson River School Sojurn runs until Jul. 8 and opening day includes a talk with collector Dr. Michel Hersen.
There will also be a free hands-on activity for children and a late-afternoon reception.
Other exhibitions on tap in 2009 include photographs by Ansel Adams (July 18 - Sept. 13), outdoor sculpture by regional contemporary artists (May 16 - Oct. 4), and selections from the museum’s own collections (September 26 - November 15).
“The museum’s 2009 calendar is brimming with special programs and events for visitors of all ages,” said executive director Colleen Schafroth. “Almost every weekend there is something special happening.”
Schafroth pointed to upcoming events like Family Fun Days, Maryhill Arts Festival, Fourth of July Celebration, and the Car is King Weekend.

Bickleton kid wins library contest
Bickleton School sixth-grader Brandon Berk is one of nine grand-prize winners for a bookmark-making contest through the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District.
Berk’s artwork, submitted through the Goldendale Community Library, was picked from nearly 4,000 entries districtwide for the 2009 Bookmark Contest.
One winner was picked for each grade.
His entry, which featured pictures of a boombox and rocking chair with the words, “Books Rock,” scrolled above, will be featured in a color copy handout to be distributed in April at libraries and three bookmobiles.
Berk and the eight others will receive their original framed entries as keepsakes and will be recognized at celebrations held at their home libraries in April, National Library Month.

Dr. Seuss birthday bash held at Wishram School
Wishram School celebrated Read Across America by throwing a Dr. Seuss birthday bash, coordinated by Americorps Washington Reading Corps. The reading event engaged 25 elementary students in reading books and writing book reports. The students turned in a total of 315 book reports. Kindergarten student, Tyrce Miller read a total of 33 books and won the prize for the most books read.
During the birthday bash several games were played and stories were read by staff, starting with The Cat in The Hat story. One of the events for the bash was a pickle spitting contest where students spit pickles across the gym floor.
The bash ended with beat-boxing and rapping performed by high school sophomore, Henry Matai, and junior, Alan Matai along with staff member Antoine Montoya. They performed “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”
