Soaring to State

Haley Hoffman
For The Sentinel

"Soaring to Success!" This theme inspired 1,700 students in attendance at the Future Business Leaders of America, (FBLA) conference April 9-11,in Spokane.      Numbered among those 1,700 students were four of our very own Goldendale High School students. Sonny Hammack competed in Emerging Business Issues along with his partner Kyle Ross and Haley Hoffman and Stacy Thompson participated in Public Speaking 1 and 2. Although no one advanced to nationals, it was a great learning experience and they are busy planning for next year.
Magician Brad Barton, author of the book, Beyond Illusions: The Magic of Positive Perception, spoke on the importance of recognizing the magic within people. He spoke to the many anxious and excited teens sitting in his audience specifying how there were two main types of magic. The fake type that interests many people called illusions, and the magic inside of people that consists of good qualities just waiting to be revealed.
FBLA would like to thank the school board, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Toastmasters for helping members prepare for their events.

Serena Hill receives community service award from State

Serena Hill was presented a State award as 2009 Community Service Person of the Year by the Health Care Association of Washington. KVH CEO, Phil Hanna announced the award will be presented at the Hilton Seattle airport conference center, on Thursday.
Hill, Klickitat Valley Health, C.N.A., has been employed as a home health aide with Home Health and Hospice of Klickitat Valley Health since 1999. She was nominated for the award by her co-workers and supervisor Jeanette Madsen, Home Health and Hospice Director.
Madsen said, "Serena treats all her patients like royalty; they are always impressed with her respect for their dignity in situations where dignity is often hard to maintain."
In addition to her caregiver responsibilities Serena visits friends and family who are ill, looks after the elderly, donating small incidentals to make their lives more comfortable. She's involved with 4-H, the local equestrian club, is a volunteer with Search and Rescue, cares for her disabled husband, her children and a foster child. She frequently is asked to care for chickens, horses, dogs and cats, when people are away, according Madsen.
KVH held a surprise celebration for Hill, prior to the official recognition in Seattle. Hill was presented a plaque by her fellow employees and the KVH board.

Good turnout for Goldendale free swim on opening day

It was a grand opening for the Goldendale swimming pool, logging in 275 to the bubble-topped pool to enjoy festivities and the free swim sponsored by Windy Point Partners LLC.
The early opening attracted a larger than usual opening day crowd to a season that will also be longer than usual, thanks to the dome. The usual pool opening date has been Memorial Day weekend.
The top will be taken down on June 12-13, and it will go back up in early September to add more days at the tail end of the season.
The pool, operated by Klickitat County Parks and Recreation District has begun sign-up for swimming lessons that will begin on Tuesday, April 28. Other special training days are scheduled throughout the season.
