150 Tribal Pow Wow coming

The Mid Columbia will once again serve as Oregon's regional hub May 15 and 16 as tribes from throughout the region celebrate Oregon's 150th birthday with an Indian encampment and a Gathering of Tribes.
Celilo Village, on the Columbia River just east of The Dalles, will host Friday's gathering, with the arrival of the canoes ceremony at 2 p.m.
The Dalles will host a parade downtown Saturday morning, with a pow-wow at the Fort Dalles Rodeo grounds in the afternoon.
The gathering is sponsored by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Klamath Tribes (Klamath, Modoc, Yahooskin), the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, and Burns Paiute Tribe.
All events are open to the public.
Events on May 15 begin at 9 a.m. and include: an historic sites tour; arrival of canoes, presentations; traditional salmon bake; youth activities such as stories, dances, and crafts; and a stick game tournament.
Events on May 16 start with a parade downtown in The Dalles.

Liquor will cost more in Washington

The Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) today voted to increase the markup on liquor to generate approximately $80 million in revenue during the next two-year budget cycle. The move raises the markup from the current 39.2 percent to 51.9 percent. Markup is a percentage of the cost of product to the Board. The increase will go into effect Aug. 1 and last through the end of the 2009-2011 Biennium.
This action will replace the $78.6 million that will be removed from the Liquor Revolving Fund by the Legislature in Engrossed Substitute House Bill 1244 to help close the state's $9 billion budget deficit.
The WSLCB is acting now to allow WSLCB staff time to prepare for the changes and to ensure that liquor suppliers have time to adjust their prices by August 1. Also, by increasing the markup sooner rather than later, the markup is less than it would have been if the WSLCB delayed the decision.
The increase does not apply to beer and wine products.
The Liquor Revolving Fund includes revenue from sales of spirits, beer and wine liter taxes, license fees and other related revenue sources. The fund covers WSLCB expenses and funds essential state and local services such as health care and education.
More expensive premium whiskey priced today at $41.95 would be approximately $45.65 under the new formula. A value whiskey priced today at $10.95 would be approximately $11.85 as of August 1, 2009.
In Fiscal Year 2008, the WSLCB returned a record $322 million to the state General Fund and other state and local government accounts.

Lipizzaners to perform at fairgrounds

The Klickitat County fairgrounds is no stranger to working horses, but come next week, a different kind of performance will be played out as the "World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions" show comes to Goldendale.
There will be two shows, May 21 and May 22 of these unique prancing and leaping horses. Each show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Klickitat Valley Grain Growers and www.tickets.com.
Horses and riders will perform to music with their Airs Above Ground specialty, said to have been developed on the battlefield.
Tickets are $22.50 for adults and 20.50 for children and seniors.
