GMS students participate in Math Counts competition
It takes effort and dedication to rise early on a Saturday morning and challenge yourself against the best mathematics students in the region. Practicing most of the year with a middle school coach in preparation for this big day is just what twenty Goldendale students did on May 16. The teams traveled to The Dalles Middle School for the third annual Mid-Columbia Regional Mathematics Competition. This represents the 22nd year in a row that GMS students have had the opportunity to compete in the academic arena of mathematics.
The competition consisted of four schools and seventy students from local schools in the Gorge competing in four different rounds. The first round was the individual round, second was the pairs competition, the next was the team participation, and finally, the bonus oral challenge round. In the oral round two of GMS students went up against two from The Dalles Middle School and six from Henkle Middle School. Ben Shafer lost his round and finished 8th. Joel Gerchak was in 1st place and won his round finishing 1st place overall for the second year in a row. One of the teams consisting of Joel Gerchak, Ben Shafer and Haley Smith scored high enough to bring home a 2nd place trophy.
Mathletes competing from Goldendale Middle School: eighth grade - Joel Gerchak, Kendal Bloom, Karri Furlong, Haley Smith, Joshua Justman, Ethan King, and Ben Shafer. Seventh grade - Brandon Cline, Ben Cochran, Amelia Tyndall-Kipfer, Zoey Jagelski, Sophia Casimiro, Jair Garcia, Thurman Johnson, Ethan Hoctor, Ian Anderson, Keandra Kessinger, Matthew Boardman, Matthew Blomquist and Michael Blomquist.
