Women's role in agriculture focus of workshop series
Washington State University Extension is offering a series of workshops for women involved in agriculture in the Goldendale area. The first sessions have been completed but two more sessions will be held on Wednesdays, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Klickitat PUD, 1313 South Columbus Avenue, in Goldendale.
Women managing their own farming operations now have a chance to connect with other women. "The challenges of being a woman involved in agriculture are different, and this is an opportunity to participate in workshops that address the issues important to women," according to Margaret Viebrock, WSU Extension Educator and program organizer. "Developing management and decision making skills are critical to their survival as a business."
During the classes women will learn about financial management, marketing, organizational and time management skills, government programs, risk management strategies and insurance options. Using appreciative inquiry to build on personal strengths and understanding how a personality temperament affects relationships are also included.
The fee to participate in the series is $25. Preregistration is requested by calling WSU Extension at (509) 745-8531 or e-mail Margaret Viebrock at viebrock@wsu.edu.
This Women in Agriculture series is supported by the Western Center for Risk Management Education and WSU Extension. For more information about the Center, contact Margaret Viebrock at (509) 745-8531.
Soroptimists provide school educational aid for women
Women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families and seek financial assistance to go back to school can now obtain applications for the Women's Opportunity Award, Soroptimist International of Goldendale's major service project. Applications are now available by contacting Sylvia McFarland at 773-3092. Completed applications must be returned to Soroptimist International of Goldendale by Dec. 15.
Since 1972, the Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award program has provided women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. The award can be used for tuition, books, childcare, carfare, or any other education-related expense. The Goldendale club will provide a $1,000 cash grant to its award recipient, who will then advance to the Soroptimist Northern Region level, where one recipient will receive $5,000. The program culminates with three finalist $10,000 awards.
Soroptimist International of Goldendale is a volunteer organization for women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. The Goldendale club is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas where almost 100,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories contribute time and financial support to community-based projects that benefit women.
For more information about how Soroptimist improves the lives of women and girls, call Sylvia McFarland at 773-3092.
