Bickleton students place high in robot challenge
In December as part of a computer class assignment, freshmen Joshua Cummings, Peter Clinton and Mitchell Powers entered the Zillah Robot Challenge. Zillah High School, through donations, the Zillah Science Boosters and sponsors, bought robot kits and put on the event.
They sent them out to schools in the Yakima Valley area that wanted to participate in the Robot Challenge and then the kits were returned to ZHS after the challenge was over.
Each team had to be a minimum of three students. Each kit included instructions on programming the robots. On the day of the challenge there were three competitions. The first was a “Sumo” competition. Two robots are placed in a circle and each robot attempted to push the other robot out of the circle.
The second competition was “Follow Me”. There were three obstacle courses that the robot had to find its way through in the least amount of time.
The robots could be programmed so they were light sensitive (use a flashlight to control their movement) to help guide them through the courses. The third competition “Bonus Round” was kept secret until the day of the competition so that everyone would have the same amount of time to figure out how to program their robots for this particular challenge. This competition required the robot to be sensitive to touch.
A pair of whiskers (part of the kit) were placed on the robot to tell the robot when to turn as it made its way through the surprise course.
The Bickleton team, called The Three Roboteers, placed first in the “Follow Me” competition and sixth for the day. There were 19 teams from eight different schools competing in the challenge. Jeff Charbonneau, science teacher at Zillah High School, was the organizer of the event.
