Veterans featured in GHS students’ book

Rebecca Gourley
Reporter

In 2001, Goldendale High School (GHS) English teacher Maryanna Kruse had her junior students write about Veterans in Klickitat County. Now, the class of 2009 and the class of 2010 have been able to publish their papers about veterans into two volumes of The Memoirs of Klickitat County Veterans.
This year’s volume, written by the Class of 2010, was actually written last year when they were juniors. The purpose of this required assignment is to build relationships between the generations, and to show the students involved that the older generation in our community have stories that are worth sharing. “My original goal was to record the memoirs of veterans of WWII since they are leaving us quickly. It has grown into covering all wars and peacetime,” said Maryanna Kruse.
Along with Kruse was another editor, Nicole Lundin. Lundin, language arts assistant at GHS, helped Kruse with editing and formatting.
The students choose who they want to write about, with the help from Ken Marvel. Being a veteran himself and a member of the Klickitat County Historical Society, Marvel provided interviewing tips to the students as well as countless resources about the veterans.
A ceremony was held June 9 at the GHS Gymnasium to celebrate the publishing of the second volume of the book. Many graduated seniors that contributed in this year’s volume appeared at the celebration.
The veterans who were recognized this year are: Benjamin Bush by Chase Wing, Joseph Dressel by Dylan Powers, Pete Barnes by Justin Garrigus, Frank Ross by Kyle Ross, Ed Weddle by Cody Herin, Robert Felker by Haley Grable, Kenneth Morrison by Leigh Montgomery, Jeff Furlong by Jaryd Cline, Steven Rex Miller by Trevor Fields, Jim Crook by Shawna Quantrell, Lyle Ferch by Felicia Budde, Jody Granum by Aaron Cochran, Bob Kindler by Addie Christensen, Lyle Blanchard by Kyla Harness, Michael Henslee by Alyssa Welch, Ray Mosbrucker by Sierra Davis, James Baker by Mark Baker, Dave Mattson by Scott Valentine, Karen Garcia by Elissa Bush.

Ketchum Kalf Rodeo coming

The 76th Annual Ketchum Kalf Rodeo is scheduled for this Father’s Day Weekend, June 19 and June 20 in Glenwood.
Northwest Professional Rodeo Association and Pro-West Rodeo Association-sanctioned performances will begin at 1 p.m. both days. Cowboys and cowgirls from throughout the Northwest will provide exciting rodeo action in conventional timed and rough stock events. SunStation, a mounted flag team from the Yakima area, will perform face-paced exhibitions during the performances.
Kelly Bowcutt’s Gold Buckle Rodeo Company from Roosevelt will be providing top-ranked bulls and broncs to guarantee tough competition for the cowboys.
A Tye Murray Memorial Jacket will be awarded to the all-around cowboy winning the most money in both timed and rough stock events. Glenwood is the second of three events that will determine the annual winner of the Klickitat County Saddle. The Klickitat County resident who wins the most points at Bickleton, Glenwood, and the Klickitat County Fair Rodeo will win the coveted, once-in-a-lifetime saddle.
Following Saturday’s rodeo performance, tryouts for the 2011 Ketchum Kalf Rodeo Queen will begin. Meanwhile, back at the Western beer garden, the group Countryside Ride will be playing tunes for dancing during the early evening. Food and merchandise vendors will be located on the grounds throughout the weekend.
Sunday morning bright and early, the Homemakers will be cooking up a tasty couwboy breakfast at the school, from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The Pioneer Memorial Community Church provides a cowboy church service in the dance hall from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The rodeo parade begins in downtown Glenwood at 11 a.m. and heads out to the rodeo grounds. There’ll be just enough time to grab something to eat at the food vendors before Sunday’s rodeo performance.
Special kids’ games, such as stickhorse and hat and bedroll races, are planned during Sunday’s performance. The 2011 Ketchum Kalf Rodeo Queen will also be announced during Sunday’s performance.
There is plenty of camping space available among the pine trees surrounding the rodeo grounds virtually at the foot of Mt. Adams.

Teens have their own program, in which they can earn $5 gift certificates and entries into a grand-prize drawing by reading or listening to books this summer. Each 10 hours of reading will earn either one gift certificate or a chance at winning great prizes like a Wii game console, an electric guitar, or a mountain bike. Teens can earn a maximum of $20 in certificates; prize drawing entries are unlimited. Sign-ups end Aug. 15.
Young people can participate at the Goldendale Community Library, Klickitat County Bookmobile, or any other Fort Vancouver Regional Library branch. Prizes can be claimed until Aug. 31.
