Offshore drilling not the answer to high oil prices
To The Editor:
With oil moving toward $150 per barrel and gas nearing $4.50 per gallon, it’s time to dust off that Mission Accomplished banner and hang it on the White House.
George Bush and Dick Cheney both have deep connections to the oil industry. Since 2000 they have worked hard to deregulate commodities trading in the oil futures market.
This is the true reason for the spike in crude oil prices; not the supply of crude oil or the cost of refining. These high prices can only lead to more excessive revenue for an industry which has had outrageous profits since Mr. Bush has been President.
Now Mr. Bush wants to complete the trifecta by allowing offshore oil drilling.
This would insure more massive profits for the oil companies at public expense for years after Mr. Bush leaves the White House.
Perhaps at that time he could take the Mission Accomplished banner with him and hang it at his ranch in Crawford, or in his Presidential Library at Southern Methodist University.

Adventist relief workers aid disaster victims
To the Editor,
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is stepping up its assistance to the survivors of two natural disasters in East Asia in early May.
More than 78,000 people have died and 56,000 remain missing in Myanmar, a nation formerly known as Burma. Other estimates have put the potential death toll at 100,000.
ADRA teams traveling by boat have each delivered enough food for some 2,000 people for a week. Relief workers have also distributed medical supplies, water purification systems, kitchen kits, blankets, and clothing.
ADRA’s emergency response efforts to the 7.9 magnitude earthquake in China are centered in the town of Jiulong in Sichuan province, where about 12,000 people are expected to receive direct assistance. ADRA’s emergency personnel of 40 volunteers have already conducted the first distribution of relief goods with the assistance of local authorities.
The death toll has topped more than 65,000 according to media reports. This disaster is considered the worst earthquake in China since1976.
Each year the residents and businesses of Goldendale are asked to give funds to help the needy. This is one instance of how ADRA helps worldwide. Thank you to the community for the help you have given.

Legion salutes community volunteers
To the Editor,
We, the American Legion Post 116, sincerely appreciate the 35 community volunteers for their help Memorial Day weekend, in putting up and taking down the 400 flags, and for setting chairs up for visitors at Mt. View Cemetery.
They helped turn two six-hour work days into two hour and a half work parties.
It was an honor and privilege to work side-by-side with these fine members of our community, both young and old, to honor men and women of all services, who have given their lives defending America.
We all owe a great deal to these heroes who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
