Let the will of the people decide
To the Editor:
There is a simple solution to the war in Iraq. Both Iraq and the United States claim to be functioning democracies. Basic civics teaches us that a democracy implements the will of the people. Iraq has national elections in October and our country votes in November. A simple referendum on both ballots would adequately convey the “will” of the people. In both the Untied States and Iraq the question would be if voters want US troops to leave Iraq and when.
I’m not so naive as to believe that politicians in either country would actually follow the will of the people; but it’s nice to dream.

The best leader money can buy
To the Editor:
Aren’t we lucky? We have the best political system money can buy. And that is exactly the problem. We will be given the choice of only two candidates for president that have the seal of approval from the corporate media. Both Obama and McCain are bought and paid for to do the bidding of the large corporations that own our country.
In early May of this year, Exxon posted its second highest earnings ever of $10.9 billion. All top 20 recipients of cumulative contributions from Exxon Mobil since 1990 are republicans with President Bush at the top, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.
However, in the 2008 election cycle the second biggest recipient of contributions from Exxon is Obama. McCain is third and Clinton in fourth place.
Then there’s Chevron. Obama received $26,313; McCain received $16,400; and Clinton received $14,650. British petroleum, Shell oil, etc - they all want to be on the good side of a potential new president.
Is there any difference between the two? Sure. McCain, who at times differed with the Bush administration, has consistently changed his mind to fall in line on many issues like torture, tax cuts for the rich etc. He will probably be a continuation of the Bush era.
Obama, will claim to be for change and probably will also continue the Bush era, unless pressured by an aware and active population. So go back to your couches and let the politicians and their bosses - the large corporations - continue to turn the screws.

A great time was had by all
To the Editor:
We recently moved back to Goldendale. It was our first time getting to enjoy the fireworks at the World War II Park and the Community Days parade and the whole weekend solidified my every reason for moving back here.
Our kids loved the fireworks and I was also thrilled we stayed here to walk about the town without gassing up and going to Hood River or Cascade Locks.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the parade, the Auto Main street display, and the county courthouse, the only place to be.
Next year I am looking forward to visiting the museum and art gallery.

Glad to see Brim go
To the Editor,
A few KVH hospital commissioners are showing their wisdom by voting to not continue with Brim Management at the Goldendale Hospital.
In my opinion, Brim employees have done an extremely bad job. Some say they brought the hospital into good financial stability, which is partly the reason they were hired. What they brought after a couple years was the worst audit by the state ever given to the Goldendale hospital.
Again, in my opinion, the hospital is not in good financial shape today and will have to tighten its belt to survive. Time will tell! In the meantime, there is a lot of work to do. Thanks guys for not taking the lazy way out by renewing with Brim.
