Volunteer to help kids read and do math

To the Editor:

Goldendale Schools have dedicated teachers and top rated programs for all our children.
However, there are always a few children that fall behind for some reason.
Perhaps they have moved several times, perhaps they have been ill and missed school, perhaps there has been a family disruption like divorce or loss of a job.
Sometimes the reason is simply unknown. You have seen these children. She is the little blonde girl in the corner of the classroom trying to find the place on the page when it’s her turn to read.
He is the little boy with the freckles chewing on his eraser and struggling to remember 6 times 8.
Within a few weeks of volunteer support, you can help these children catch up and succeed.
One of the greatest joys is to hear a child say,  “This is the best book I ever read.”
Just one hour a week of your time can encourage a Goldendale student to reach higher and try harder.
The Goldendale School District’s math and reading programs, called HOSTS - Help One Student to Succeed, are seeking volunteers to work with children from kindergarten through fifth grades.
Training, materials and support are provided by certified teachers who are always available to answer questions or lend assistance.
Mentors work with the same children each time they come making it possible to build a relationship with the child over the school year.  Not only do the children benefit, but our mentors enjoy the experience, too.
If you are willing to give one hour of your time to help a child improve their reading or math skills, please contact Goldendale Primary School.

The election is over; let’s come together now

To the Editor:
I am glad it’s over, and hopeful for the future.
For all of my friends and family who may be disappointed in the outcome of any of the elections, I hope that you, too, are hopeful for the future.
I believe that almost all of us want the same basic things for our nation: Peace, prosperity, freedom and opportunity. We all want to be happy and live full lives with good health.
So, our goals are probably very similar, but the paths we choose to get to them may vary.
We are all pretty opinionated about which is the best route to take, and may think it is the only way.
You know, should we lower taxes or raise them. Have government be more involved or less involved. Allow gay marriage or not.
The list goes on and on.
One thing I do know - if we have the same goals, we are really on the same side, and there are undoubtedly many roads to the promised land.
Let’s not destroy ourselves or hate each other because we want to take a different path.
In the U.S., we are required to choose a leader by the electoral college method. It is an old process, but it has stood the test of time.
So we have only a single leader, so you could say we have a new captain on our ship. Let’s work together to keep on course.
I think it may be a good voyage.
