Steindorf letter exactly right

To the Editor:
I read with interest the letter in last week's newspaper written by Thomas Bundy about his English teacher when he was a student at Goldendale High School. Mr. Steindorf (Craig, the subject of Mr. Bundy's letter) happens to be my brother, and dozens of times over the past 25 to 30 years, people have asked me if I was related to the teacher in Goldendale. It is amazing how many of these people have told me many of the same things Mr. Bundy mentioned in his letter about Craig.
A few examples: he expected perfection, he never accepted excuses, he had high expectations, he was the best teacher I ever had, his class helped me in my college years, he was tough but fair, he was hard working. It did not take me long to figure out what a fine educator my brother was, and how dedicated he was to the students he taught. I have always felt that there is a big need in this country for more teachers like Craig.
His teaching philosophy, as he related it to me years ago, was actually pretty simple. He felt that in every class there were students who wanted or hoped to go on to college, and other students who had no interest in college, as they may have had other plans. He would teach his classes at a high level to benefit those wanting to go on to college, so that they would be prepared when they got there.      That high standard may have bothered those students who had no interest in college, as well as some of their parents, but as Mr. Bundy mentioned in his letter, "he would not disrespect us or our educations by lowering his standards."
If you read this letter, Craig, don't be hard on my punctuation, spelling, and grammar. After all, it has been 39 years since I graduated from high school, and my skills may be a little rusty. I do believe that if I would have had you for a high school teacher, I would have been able to pull an A in your class. You have impacted many people in a very positive way...congratulations on a job done the right way.

Java Talk off to good beginning

To the Editor:
While we have lost our wonderful radio station, our own hometown newspaper has stepped in to try to assist us through its one-hour Java Talk program each Friday at Sodbuster's. What a great opportunity for our community to still keep in touch and up-to-date on local issues!
Regrettably, at least a couple of regular radio participants had their breakfast there but did not come in to the meeting. It was, and is, open to everybody. It was interesting, and the coffee was great.
I suggest you jump into some clothes, grab your notes, enjoy an informal coffee klatch, and find out what's going on. Once a week is certainly better than nothing. The Sentinel is willing try. What about you?
