Referendum 71 is matter of civil rights
To the Editor:
I urge your readers to approve Referendum 71. This is not a moral issue but one of equal/civil rights. Each of us wants and deserves the right to protect our families and our loved ones. This is not just an issue of same-sex partnership. Read your voters' pamphlet and give careful consideration to this issue, and then I hope you will realize that this is an issue of equal rights, not "special rights," and vote "approved" on Referendum 71.

Cheerleaders something to cheer about
To the Editor:
On Oct. 24, the Goldendale Chamber of Commerce held its annual membership meeting and banquet. This is the second year that a dinner has been served with a large attendance of Chamber members. Last year the girl's volleyball team assisted with the serving of the dinner and did an outstanding job.
This year the Chamber of Commerce asked the cheerleaders if they would be interested in serving the dinner and assisting with the clean up. The girls arrived with enthusiasm, smiles on their faces, and an all-around friendly attitude. Before the dinner, the entire group of girls mingled among the Chamber membership and introduced themselves with adult-like conduct and adult conversation.
These girls did a great job of representing themselves, their school, and the community of Goldendale. If these girls are an example of the type of youth being raised in our community, their parents, coaches, and Goldendale can be very proud.
Great job, girls.

Keep an eye on your lights
To the Editor:
Winter is coming. No doubt about it. And with it comes situations that cause accidents, many of which can be avoided. On two recent trips to The Dalles and back, I lost count of the number of vehicles with one headlight out. Possibly a bulb has burned out, or something has happened during the summer and the driver is still unaware of the problem.
Unfortunately, oncoming traffic has no way of knowing if they are meeting someone with a left light out, a right light out, or a motorcycle in fog, snow, darkness or a dangerous situation along some of our narrow county roads.
May I suggest that the next time you pull into your carport, garage, or in front of a local business, you turn on your headlights and check the reflection. It will take only a couple seconds to learn if you have a problem that needs to be fixed.
As for tail lights, it only takes about 20 seconds to start your car, step out, and check to see if they are both working, along with turn signals so people coming up from behind can see you.
The life you save may be yours, and I am sure you would not want to see anyone else injured because of an undetected problem with your vehicle.
