What does it take to end a war?
To the Editor:
Just weeks before accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, President Obama calls for war with 30,000 more troops. That will bring the total to 100,000, plus an equal number of private contractors. He claims that this surge will allow us to bring the troops home in a couple of years.
How does a country end a war and come home? By increasing the number of warfare participants, of course. How stupid of me not to understand this. Send more troops so that they can come home in a couple of years.
Some, however, will have already come home in body bags, and some will be back severely broken both physically and mentally.
More troops, it is claimed, will make the mission successful. But what exactly is the mission? We are instructed that it is to defeat al-Qaeda. Intelligence says that this enemy is no longer a viable group in Afghanistan, but is now spread out to Pakistan, Somalia, and maybe even in San Diego. Details, details. In order to understand, just repeat over and over the following: "War is peace, war is peace." (That quote is courtesy of George Orwell.)

Canine crossing guard for deer
To the Editor:
This is in regard to the picture on last week's front page, of the deer and the dog. We had a little deer in our front yard, which is quite often, but this time our local neighborhood dog with pink hair (the one in your picture) came into the yard. She proceeded to herd the deer down the driveway to the street. Before the deer got to the street, she planted herself in the middle of the road to stop any traffic that might happen along. She then signaled the deer (somehow) that it was OK to cross. Once the deer crossed, she went trotting down the street like nothing ever happened.
