Vote for the library
To the Editor:
Seventeen! It’s the age of one of my grandchildren, or the name of a teen magazine, or the possible distance in miles between neighbors still in reach of our library.
Libraries count! They truly are the heart of our communities, and I can prove it: our library is not just a clean, well-lighted place for books. It’s where you can go to find electronic media, from popular films to instructional DVDs, and free internet access. All by the turn of a card—a library card, that is. And even if you don’t have one yet, we have tutors to help adults learn to read, or to help fill out job applications and write resumes. We have entertaining and fun crafts for your children to get their hands into. There are programs to open their eyes, their ears, and their minds, whether they’re toddlers or teens. Music, well-trained staff, extra summer programs that present reptiles, raptors, jugglers; what else? Ask!
Seventeen? The length in years since the library district has asked for a raise. Not an additional tax, but only up to what’s already been authorized – you’ve seen the figures; maybe $1.75 a month in a mid-priced house. Vote on the 17th, for your library.
Oh, by the way, Hood River didn’t. They don’t have one anymore.

Rodeo Bible Camp makes an impact
To the Editor:
Hats off to all of the folks who make up the local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys (FCC)! For the second consecutive year, the FCC has organized the Goldendale Rodeo Bible Camp for the young people of our community. Through the avenue of rodeo, the men and women of the FCC are making a significant impact on the next generation. The counselors and instructors are not just teaching these young people how to be successful in rodeo but in all areas of life with the primary emphasis being that of faith in Christ Jesus.
I applaud the men and women of the FCC and I want to extend my deep appreciation for the many hours of hard work that went into this event. You are to be commended for all you have done, and may God richly bless your efforts and the future of the Goldendale Rodeo Bible Camp!

Department of Peace can work
To the Editor:
There have been many good letters lately about the “war.” I just want to get my two cents in.
There’s a big difference in opinion about this being a “war” at all. The attack in New York was not one country attacking the USA. Terrorists are from many countries, and some live here, too. When we invaded Iraq, and now Afghanistan and Pakistan, we were told it was to fight terrorism. Is it a coincidence that many big corporations just happen to have lucrative contracts to harvest oil and help reconstruct the damage the “war” has done?
Killing innocent people doesn’t stop terrorism; it aids it. I respect and support our soldiers for wanting to defend our country. Their personal sacrifices are incredible. I hate losing any life so we can drive around in our cars, make our plastics, and transport our goods. We’re all a part of this; as taxpayers, how horrible to see all this money wasted. Think about all the budget cuts to education, healthcare, and social security that might not have been needed if we weren’t spending millions per day in this “war.”
There’s a movement in our country to create a Department of Peace. Please don’t tell me, “It won’t do any good; we will always have war.” If no one believes there can be peace in this crazy world, there never will be. Join the Goldendale peace group and exercise your right to free speech, if you oppose this “war” (but support our soldiers). At least you can do something to express your disagreement with this invasion into the Middle East. And check out the national movement for peace at www.thepeacealliance.org.
