Candidate impresses more

To the Editor:
The election of the new Klickitat County Assessor will make more difference to individual property owners than any other contest. We would all do well to make an informed and thoughtful choice.
While exploring my eligibility for reduced property tax as a senior citizen, I have had the occasion to speak with both Victoria Allen and Adam DeHart. With seven years of experience in the assessor’s office, Victoria Allen was professional and knowledgeable about all aspects of this program for seniors, even though this program is not her direct responsibility. With her advice, I requested a reappraisal of my primary residence and land as new construction. She followed through with this request and asked the program specialist to contact me.
Adam DeHart was the appraiser who came to evaluate my land and building. He came while I was out of town and left his card. I called and asked for a return call. He called back promptly. I was able to give him some details to help with the appraisal, but all the questions I asked he had to check with someone else in the office before answering. This inability to answer basic questions and the vague answers he gave at the Soropthomist’s Candidate’s forum in White Salmon convinced me that he is not qualified to be county Assessor. I place my trust and vote with Victoria Allen.

Different kind of barking

To the Editor:
Human beings never cease to amaze me. My daughter and I have been volunteering with the rescued dogs out at the shelter west of town. I’m amazed at the women who run the shelter and all the volunteers. They put endless hours of help and hard work so these dogs can be taken out of their terrible situations and placed in good homes. It’s great to see the people in my community make such a wonderful effort.
It also amazes me that someone would complain about the barking. Instead of being part of the problem, come out and volunteer and be part of the solution. We are all working very hard to get these dogs healthy and placed in good care as soon as possible so that your life is not disrupted longer than necessary.
We have our hands full with the canine species; we don’t need problems with the human species.

Library deserves our support

To The Editor:
The Goldendale Library is a haven for many children. It provides a safe environment while searching for books, reading, attending classes, and using computers.
I began using this library when I was six years old under the guidance of Lela Ramsey. It still brings forth some of my happiest childhood memories.
The library is one of the most valuable assets for our community and East County. The levy will help us maintain the available resources. Please vote yes for our Goldendale Library.

Senate candidate is stand-out

To the Editor:
I want you to join me and thousands of others to elect Clint Didier to the U.S. Senate.
I have known Clint Didier since we attended Connell High School, where he graduated in 1977, and now coaches the football team that has been in the State playoffs the past few years.
Clint Didier is a kind, caring, intelligent, family man who supports farming and ranching issues.
You will notice that when you see his picture in the newspapers, you see him working his family farm, not like those professional politicians grinning from ear to ear.
Let’s put Clint Didier in the U.S. Senate to work for us.

Son injured in construction site

To the Editor:
My seven-year-old son fell into an unmarked pit from road construction on 202 E court & Chatfield heading into the night. I was walking my two sons and the dog, which I have done since visiting these past few days. I don’t live here, but my family does.
Minor cuts and scrapes on his knee, hands, and chin—average boy stuff. I brushed it off, probably like everyone else, thinking safety is their own personal concern. Then I took another walk down Allyn Street and had to keep my son from falling into an uncovered catch basin.
So this started the first complaint I have ever taken the time to file and try to get some answers.
I called public works, city hall, Pioneer Engineering (which is managing this road project), and the sidewalk curbing company.
I don’t want to do this, sit here and waste my time complaining about something I have no control over. But the more calls I made, the more run-around I got. Nobody acknowledged responsibility to make sure there’s a safe, hazardous-free environment on city sidewalks. I’m disappointed and a little angry. What really gets me is how I picked up a city shovel a month ago that somebody dropped and left there, along with a steel post, sign, and rebar. [The shovel was left without notice at The Sentinel office, where it presently still resides. —Editor.]
I can walk out of this house and look at tipped-over cones, barrier signs, and unmarked pits from a month ago that the city can’t even put back up!
Disorganized, unsafe, and hazardous conditions are not what I want my sons to see or learn from anybody, especially the town they grew up in. Can we please do better?
