Cattlemen of the Year awards announced

Dixie and Mike Kelley are the 2010 Cattlemen of the Year, as announced at the Mar. 20, annual banquet of the Klickitat County Livestock Association.
The Kelleys’ operation is located in the Sundale area, west of Roosevelt. Mike Kelley’s great-grandfather established the operation in 1885. Mike and Dixie purchased it in 1980. The Kelleys run an Angus cross, cow-calf operation ranging into the Dot and Rock Creek areas. Keeping with tradition, they will host a ranch tour this year, scheduled for May 29.
Other high honors went to Tony Sarsfield of Centerville, recipient of the O.P. Kreps Pioneer award recognizing long-term producers; Nancy Johnson, recognized for service to the industry with the Jim Bridgefarmer Memorial award. Also recognized were Michael Jagelski and McKayla Whitmire, joint winners of the Jean Schilling Memorial award, and Nic Venema, recipient of the Joe Hassing Memorial steer.
The results of the Steer of Merit awards from the 2009 Klickitat County Fair were also announced, with calves shown by Heather and Jacob McElravy tying for top honors. The awards are based on relative carcass merit among 36 steers entered in the competition. The breeders for Heather’s steer were Charles and Alice Eshelman, while Jacob’s calf came from Dan and Lori McElravy. Each had an index of 112 percent.
Finishing second at 105 percent were calves belonging to Peter Clinton, out of Bob Schoessler’s breeding, and Maddie Cameron, whose calf came from Jim Frost’s herd. Other top finishers who met the merit standards were: Angel Murillo, 104 percent (calf by Keith Kreps), Shelby Kayser, 102 percent (calf by Nate Kayser), Logan Siebert, 101 percent (calf by Paul Gregg), Briley Cameron, 101 percent (calf by Jim Frost), Katelynn Clinton, 101 percent (calf by Bob Schoessler), Taylor Brown, 100 percent (calf by JR Ranch), and Cassie Kayser, 95 percent (calf out of Jess Kayser). Hot carcass weights ranged from 725 pounds for Siebert’s calf to 858 pounds for Taylor’s calf.
Also recognized from the County Fair were champion and reserve champion livestock exhibitors. They were: Jess Beierle (champion) and Madison Holbrook (reserve) for sheep; Kyle Dean (champion) and Alex Mains (reserve) for swine; Jeremy Kyte (champion) and Quentin Mortensen (reserve) for goat; and Cole Cameron (champion) and Heather McElravy (reserve) for beef.

Multiple arrests made for tagging, meth, cruelty

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Sometimes things just fall into place, as was the experience of Goldendale police last Friday.
The day began with a request from the Department of Corrections (DOC) for the arrest of a parole violator, who was in the DOC offices. When police arrived, the individual fled and was pursued by five police officers and three county deputies.
The chase led police to a residence on South Columbus Avenue. Police were allowed inside to search for the fugitive and instead found Michael Gaither, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant. Gaither was arrested and the search continued. When police visited a nearby residence, they noticed a drawing that looked like the graffiti that has been showing up in public and private places around Goldendale recently. Upon questioning, two people stated that the person who was responsible for the tagging was Pete Kelly, who was at the residence.
Kelly was still not the person police were searching for, but he is believed responsible for at least 14 tagging incidents, and he was arrested and charged with criminal mischief. As the search continued, police received another tip that led them to an East Main Street residence where they arrested A.J. Campos on a warrant for delivery of methamphetamines. The DOC violator was not found.
In other action, police were called to a residence where new residents were greeted with a decidedly unfriendly welcome to Goldendale—their cat was shot with a pellet gun by their neighbor.      The incident occurred on Sunday as the family, who had moved to town three days prior, were outside for a barbeque when they heard a couple of loud pops. They noticed a gun protruding from their neighbor’s window and found their cat had been shot. Police charged the neighbor, Daniel Lichtenwald, with animal cruelty. The cat was taken to the veterinarian and treated for loss of an eye.

Most Wanted captured

A Monday morning chase through Goldendale led to the arrest of Goldendale Police’s most wanted individual from last week, Devin Prouty.
Police received a tip that Prouty was seen on East Broadway around 7:10 a.m. As police responded, Prouty was seen heading west on Broadway. Officer Mike Smith pursued in a chase that led to a residence on Court Street. Prouty fled into the residence with Officer Smith in tow. Prouty was subdued and arrested on a U.S. Marshal’s warrant.
According to police, Prouty was also to be charged with felony eluding an officer, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana and methamphetamines with the intent to deliver.
