Mary Helen (Alway) Cherry
Mary Cherry, 72, of Goldendale, died May 8, 2008, at her home. She was born March 22, 1936, in Seattle, but grew up in Skamania County. She lived the last 20 years of her life in Goldendale.
Mary was a proud member of the Goldendale Grange. She served a term as vice-president and was very active in gleaners. Her booth designs helped the Goldendale Grange win several awards at the Klickitat County Fair.
Her love of children was apparent throughout her life. Mary touched the lives of many local children through her work as assistant preschool teacher for the Learning Ladder at the Goldendale Lutheran Church. She continued her work with children when she opened her own home daycare, which she ran until her retirement.
She spent many happy hours at the Goldendale Senior Center. Many of her friends helped care for her during her illness, including Lucille Bevis, who provided live-in care.
Mary’s children and grandchildren were the light of her life.
Survivors include four children, Debbie Smith of Tumwater, Steven and Jody Veeder of Couer d’Alene, Idaho, Joe (Washon) Nice of Goldendale, and Dean Veeder, Jr. of Vancouver; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; three brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion, May 31, at 1 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to OSHU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.
