Frances Scarola

Frances Scarola, 88, of Goldendale, died May 17, 2008, at the Oregon Veteran’s Home in The Dalles.
She was born to Sofie (Worofsky) and Frank Depke on Nov. 5, 1919, in Howard Beach, N. Y.
Frances and her sisters, Catherine and Margaret, spent their early years in Howard Beach.
After completing high school, Frances performed in the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus for a short time.
She then became part of a professional roller skate group called “The Three Flashes”. They traveled throughout the United States performing on stage and at theaters.
On Sept. 21, 1941, Frances married John G. Scarola, a fellow member of “The Three Flashes”. They made their home in Valley Stream, N.Y., where they raised their four children, John, Timothy, Judy-Anne and Kenneth. When the children were young, John and Frances formed a professional roller skating group called “The Flying Scarolas”. They and the children skated throughout the Northeast in both resorts and on stage.
When her husband retired, they moved to Rhinebeck, N. Y., and in 1976 they moved west to Goldendale to be closer to the children who had previously moved west.
Frances was especially fond of music and art. She loved flowers and gardening. She enjoyed needlework, especially crocheting and tatting. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret McCabe, her husband, John G. Scarola and two grandchildren, Katie Scarola and David Shatraw. Frances was a devoted wife and mother.
Survivors include her children, John and Shonnie Scarola of Goldendale, Tim and Pat Scarola of Goldendale, Judy Anne and Harvey Shatraw of Binghamton, N. Y., and Ken and Donna Scarola of Goldendale; a sister, Catherine Depke of Phoenix, Ariz., 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sunday evening, May 25, at 6:30 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Burial will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery.
Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
