Henry Loren Lester
Henry Loren Lester, 85, died Sept. 16, 2008, at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles.
He was born in Goldendale April 2, 1923, to Gertrude (Harlan) and Henry Lester.
Shortly after graduating from high school in Bickleton, Henry joined the United States Army. During World War II, he served in the 7th Cavalry and was involved in the invasion of Leyte Beach in the Philippines on General Douglas MacArthur’s return. From there Mr. Lester moved on to serve in Japan. After his honorable discharge from the military, Henry returned to Washington, working in Roosevelt on the railroad until his retirement in 1984.
Henry kept busy with lots of hobbies. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and was also a custom woodworker. Henry loved tinkering and was known as a “fix-it” man.
Survivors include his son, James Lester of The Dalles; daughter, Joyann Woodruff of Everett; sister, Roma Rhoads and her husband Gerald of Walnut Creek, Calif.; nephew, Larry Rhoads of Napa, Calif.; and nieces Diana Paulsen of Lafayette, Calif., and Linda Kanbara of Altadena, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his son, Russell Lester in 1953, and his mother, Gertrude Lester in 1989.
A graveside service with military honors was held Sept. 22, at Mt. View Cemetery in Goldendale, with a reception following at Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel.
