Lawrence (Larry) Sybouts

Lawrence (Larry) Sybouts was born on January 8, 1919 in Moxee, Wash., to Reinder and Petrine (Haugen) Sybouts. Larry died on November 6, 2008 in Wheeler, Ore., at the age of 89.
Larry grew up in Moxee and attended high school there where he lettered in baseball, basketball and track. After high school he attended Whitman Business College in Yakima for one and a half years. He then enlisted in the United States Army serving as a Finance Technical Clerk (headed officers pay section for a division) during World War II in the Third Division in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Austria.
After the war, he met Gladys Coffey at the Yakima Ice Arena through her brother, Byron. They were married in Yakima on July 17, 1948. They lived for seven years in Yakima and three years in Grandview before moving to Goldendale. They lived in Goldendale for over 50 years.
Larry was very active in church. He was a third grade Sunday school teacher for about 40 years and served as church treasurer in various Baptist churches over his lifetime. Larry had a lifelong interest in sports, attending many Goldendale High School games. He began bowling after leaving the Army and earned dozens of bowling trophies.
Larry’s career was an accountant, or bookkeeper as he called himself, and retired from Boise Cascade in January 1984. After retiring he and Gladys enjoyed visiting family and traveling to various national parks. Gladys and Larry moved to Tillamook, Ore., in October of 2008.
Larry will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his sister Mabel Lang. Larry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gladys Sybouts of Tillamook, Ore.; daughters, Gayle Talbot (Steve) of Moses Lake, and Karen Begalka (Brent) of Renton; son, Mark Sybouts of Tillamook, Ore.; sister, Louise Anderson of Seattle; brother, Henry “Hank” Sybouts (Lois) of Bellingham; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. A memorial service will take place on Nov. 15, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Tillamook, Oren. Donations in Larry’s name may be made to Gideon’s International. Arrangements are in care of Waud’s Funeral Home in Tillamook.
