Robert John Garrison
Robert John Garrison died Nov. 7, 2008, of thyroid cancer at the age of 81 in the presence of his sons at Evergreen Hospice Center in Kirkland.
He was born Feb. 3, 1927, in Sunnyside to Robert E. and Lurena (Finley) Garrison. He married June Kathleen Golding at Caxton Hall in London in June 1948.
His parents moved to Goldendale where he was raised and went to school. He left high school to become a Merchant Marine radio officer and was in the western Pacific when WW II ended. His ships took him to Asia, South America, and Europe where he met his wife June in London in 1948.
In the 1950s he started working for Standard Oil in the gas station business in Yakima. He moved his family to Port Angeles in 1961 where he eventually partnered in a Standard Oil filling station with Jack Atkinson. He retired from Bob and Dons Chevron in 1989 and was proud to have owned his own business.
He became a member of Port Angeles Masonic Lodge #69 where he rose in standing to Worshipful Master in 1979. He became a lifetime member there as well as at Masonic Lodge #298 in Forks, and Masonic Lodge #31 in Goldendale where he grew up.
He is preceded in death by his wife, June Kathleen Garrison, in 2007 and his sister, Phyllis Householder, in 2001.
He is survived by his son Kenneth W. Garrison, wife Sharon and their daughter Rachel of Prescott, Ariz.; son Robert R. Garrison and wife Katherine Baril, of Port Townsend, and nephews Robert and Scott Householder, of Goldendale.
There will be a private gathering. His ashes will be scattered out on the Columbia River Bar where he once crossed on his way to see his new world.
