Gordon Boyes
Gordon Boyes, 92, died May 25, 2009.
Gordon was born on Nov. 21, 1917, in Carrot Creek, Northern Alberta, Canada, the son of John Henry Boyes and Lula Edna (Lamb). His father, John Henry, captured a lactating moose to feed “little Gordy” when Lula passed away while Gordon was still a baby.
Gordon emigrated with his dad and brother during the depression to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He decided the eighth grade was enough schooling. He earned his American citizenship in 1941 in Klickitat. He sunk his roots in the shadow of Mount Adams, marrying Vivian Saunders. They had three children: Gordon Kirtley, John Alpha, and Verna Rebecca.
Gordon made a career in the timber industry. He earned a patent in 1958, inventing the W-B safety quick release to save the lives of men unloading huge logs from the 16-foot-wide bunks of early logging trucks. He retired from a long career managing the shops of St. Regis Paper Company in the Klickitat River valley below Glenwood.
Gordon kept busy in retirement, remarrying twice, to Lorraine and to Michelle. He was widowed three times. He loved a lively game of pinochle and was very skilled with metal and woodworking tools, always keeping busy in his shop.
Gordon is survived by his son, John, six grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and his loving “second family” at High Prairie Assisted Living.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Gateway Presbyterian Church in The Dalles, Saturday, June 13, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Gordon was laid to rest beside Vivian in Goldendale cemetery.
