Edward Van Aelst

Edward Van Aelst died Dec. 20, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born Aug. 3, 1927, at a logging camp, the first-born son of Arie and Neva Van Aelst. On Sept. 7, 1948, he married Lenora Atkins.
As a lifelong rancher, he loved his land and the outdoors, including camping, fishing, hunting, and photography. He built two homes for himself and Lenora, including their present residence, and he also worked on barns, roofing jobs, and other projects around the area. In earlier years he was involved in the ASCS and as a director of the Klickitat Valley Grain Growers. As a young man, he took flying lessons and became a private pilot. He flew for both his own pleasure and for community service, such as spotting fires and directing fire crews. Upon joining the Rural 7 fire department, he drove various equipment, including trucks and bulldozers. Other interests included woodworking, rock work, jewelry, and redoing antique vehicles. Edward was very family-oriented and enjoyed being around people. He loved travelling, whether it was in a tent, trailer, or guided tours in the eastern U.S. and Canada.
Edward is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lenora; brother Neil (Velma) Van Aelst; sister Jean (Jim) Endy; two children, Dixie (David) Simons and Ginger (Mark) Schoesler; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Edward's name is honored by being carried forward as a middle name for one grandson and two great-grandsons.
Service was held Dec. 23, with interment at Mountain View Cemetery.
