Hal Malcolm
Former resident Hal Malcolm, 81, died Dec. 25, 2009 in Gresham, Ore.
Hal grew up and was educated in the Seattle area and graduated from Bothell High School in 1947. He attended Central Washington State University in Ellensburg and earned his bachelor and master degree in Music Education. He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Hal began his student teaching in Kittitas before becoming vocal/instrumental instructor in Goldendale from 1957 to 1965. Many of his students remember him well for the positive influence he had on their lives.
He moved his family to Vancouver in 1965, where he taught at Shumway Jr. High before starting his long career at Mt. Hood Community College in 1967, as director of choirs, specializing in vocal jazz, until his retirement at age 66. During his retirement, he wrote his autobiography along with other books.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Malcolm, and his daughter, Stacy Malcolm.
He is survived by wife Karen Malcolm; sons Cole Malcolm and Kevin Malcolm of Goldendale; daughters Taryn Lueck of Las Vegas, and Kristen AhYek of Vancouver, along with 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
