Roma Geraldine Barton
Roma Geraldine Barton, 92, of Goldendale, died Jan. 6, 2010.
She was born July 6, 1917, in Meridian, Idaho, to Amos and Leola Farlow Hoyt. Roma lived in La Grande, Cascade Locks, Portland, and other locations before moving to Goldendale 18 years ago. A strong and self-sufficient woman, Roma took on jobs typically held by men at the time; working as a welder in the shipyards during World War II, in the woods as a logger and as a cross-country truck driver.
Throughout her life, Roma also worked as a waitress and a model. She enjoyed canning peaches, arranging flowers, playing music and singing. Roma was an artistic person who loved to do embroidery and other crafts, and she was a talented seamstress.
She married Arnold Earl Barton, 56 years ago. Roma often said the best years of her life were those spent raising her children.
Her husband, Arnold, and her children, Emerlyn Joyce, Gerald “Sonny” Guffey, and Charles “Hap” Guffey-Carter, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Black and husband, Ron; brother, Barney Hoyt and wife, Glenda; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
