On Tuesday, the flags flew at half-mast to honor those in the armed forces who have fallen, as well as those who continue to fight bravely each day.
Although each year it is important to pay tribute to these men and women, it becomes particularly significant years such as this, when many of us have sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends away from home.
With Thanksgiving looming around the corner, one’s thoughts can’t help but turn to the battlefields, wondering where they are and hoping they are safe.
On Monday, retired Army first sergeant, George Miner, spoke at the primary school in Goldendale. He said the character of these troops is “vibrant with meaning.”
Isn’t that the truth.
The men and women who serve don’t offer their lives and dedication without cause. Each soldier, sailor, Marine, airman, and coast guard carries with him or her a certain meaning, purpose, and value. That value stretches beyond the politics that precede them.
They stand for freedom and are devoted to something bigger than themselves.
This week, as veterans take time to remember comrades from battles past, let’s also take a minute also to look at the soldiers on the front lines today.
It is our wishes and prayers that sustain them.
