Kudos to the City
More tax added to our vehicle license fee?
It was one of the items on the agenda of Monday night's city council meeting.
Apparently, the state has given the OK to start what's called a "transportation board," which has the authority to invoke a $20 fee on annual vehicle license tab renewals.
The board, in areas like Prosser, will earmark these fees, it is assumed, for road repair. But just how do they figure out who to tax?
Since it is a city-ordained fee, it makes sense that it would be those who live within the city limits. After all, those who live outside the city limits are not able to vote on city issues, city council or mayoral elections. To do that would amount to taxation without representation and may lead to a replay of the American Revolution.
While all across the country, cities and counties are scratching their heads trying to figure out how to keep up with the road repair and improvements, Goldendale's city government showed great wisdom Monday night, when they tabled the decision to form the transportation board.
Although a public notice was placed in The Sentinel last week, few people read it, or perhaps, even fewer seemed to care.
However, until more information could be circulated, officials decided to hold off making the decision.
They should be commended for that.
Here is another opportunity to have a voice. Do you want city streets kept in good repair? Put your money where your mouth is.
Would you rather keep your $20 a year and dodge the pot-holes on the less-traveled city streets? Then let your voice be heard.
It is your responsibility to be informed. Call the City. Ask them about the board. Even better, volunteer to serve on the board, and be part of the solution rather than just complain about the problem.
