If you ever wondered what real community service looks like, take a close look at our story this week (page one) on the library’s job seekers assistance program.
As part of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library (FVRL) system, the Goldendale library gets to bring this remarkable program to our community’s doorstep. Programs such as this have demonstrated startling results in almost every area in which they’ve been conducted, and there is every reason to believe this one will also prove to be an invaluable resource here.
By “here,” understand that we’re talking about right here in Klickitat County. Yes, FVRL extends from Vancouver all the way over this way, and yes, there are buckets more people the farther west you get, and yes, there are a lot more jobs and people looking for them over there as well. So how can it matter all that much for a program helping people looking for jobs to be available in this puny backwater?
The answer is, we’re a backwater to no one. If you’re one of the few people still thinking that we are, please take a reality check; this is one check that won’t bounce. Goldendale is what the people who comprise it decide it to be. Everywhere we turn, indications are clear and consistent: this is a community that intends to be heard and known.
Help comes to those who seek it. People serious about getting jobs get serious help. And people that serious get noticed, and they get jobs, even in areas where they don’t seem plentiful.
