Community Days are solid summer fare for the city

Evidently you get what you pay for in fireworks, as with so much else these days.
Sunday night, the Fourth of July skies above Goldendale were aglow with off-the-shelf fireworks. Well, some of the skies were, apparently only those portions where people who bought the good fireworks were. Those fireworks actually rose well into the air and exploded into pretty impressive displays.
Then there were the fireworks seen in other localities—if you were close enough to them to see them at all. These were the lackluster duds, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. They whined with a brittle din, burst into something indeterminate and colorless, rose all of three feet, and went out like the state legislature on closing day. Why aren’t there quality standards for all fireworks, so you can be sure you’ll have something worth setting off?
Nonetheless, it was a happy evening. Seeing and hearing the sounds of celebration seemed to unite the city in a joyful observance of the occasion. It’s hard to feel down when the whole area is so up, and that’s something to be grateful for on a night like that.
And there’s more of the same coming to town over the summer, beginning this weekend with Community Days. There is the usual complement of community fun in town, and the spectacular Mounted Shooters out at the Fairgrounds. There will be happy crowds, lots of excitement, great junk food—all the stuff that makes for community bonding and fellowship.
