The courts in Sunnyside were painted purple and gold, as the Timberwolf tennis team showed its dominance over SCAC west opponents on Saturday. All four doubles teams in the finals were from Goldendale and two of the four singles players in the finals were from Goldendale. It was a performance that will help Goldendale into top seeds when the district tournament comes around on May 10.
The showdown between boys doubles teams of Lance Stevens and Tanner Milliren versus Aaron and Caleb Ferch was in doubt when the Ferches met Granger’s top duo. The Ferches dispatched their first opponents in typical fashion, 8-0. However, Granger’s pair of Paul and Alegria pushed their match into a tie-breaker. The Ferches squeezed out an 8-7 win, going 8-6 on the tie-breaker. Caleb and Aaron fought their way into the finals with a much easier, 8-2 win over Naches Valley’s doubles team.
Stevens and Milliren drew a bye in the first round and had easy wins of 8-1 and 8-3 over Naches Valley’s number two team and Cle Elum’s top pair. The finals justified the seeding with Stevens and Milliren putting a halt to the Ferch win streak with a 8-3 win. It was the only loss for the twins this year.
A similar scenario played out on the girls court, only it was the number one team of Whitney Wing and Devon Moore that needed overtime to make it into the finals. They defeated Highland’s Trapp and Nichols 8-4 before sitting down Cle Elum’s Cord and Smith, 8-7 (7-2).
Laryssa Retzlaff and Brianne Cline put together 8-6, 8-3 and 8-1 wins to make it to the show-down final. The Timberwolf pairs fought a spirited match with Wing and Moore prevailing 8-5. By knocking off Naches Valley’s number one pair, Retzlaff and Cline will draw a better match in the district playoffs.
Kirt Golding and Kylee Bellamy made their way to the finals in singles play, and Nick Dumolt and Ryell Carley came within a set of making it an all Goldendale final. Golding had 8-2, 8-5 wins before falling to Cody Dunbar of Zillah, 6-4, 6-1. Bellamy lost to Zori Fossum of Naches Valley, after a strong opening set, 0-6, 6-1, 6-4. Dumolt finished third and Carley finished in fourth place.
The team had matches with Royal (April 21 at Royal City), before finishing on a three match home stand against White Swan (April 24), Burbank (April 26), and Wahluke (April 29).

Bickleton’s Pirates had a good showing on the wind-swept track at Kittitas last week, winning the boys team competition and finishing second among the girls.

The lady Pirates had two individual winners, Danielle Raschko, 6:31 in the 1600 and Katelynn Clinton with a 4-4 high jump. Clinton was also third in the discus.
The combo of Raschko, Clinton, Phylicia Person, and Star Kibby were winners in the 4x200 relay. Kibby had a pair of seconds in the pole vault and 200. Kibby’s 14-4 long jump was good enough for third place.
Other top three finishes for the Pirates were Christina Wilson, third in the 3200 and third in the 300 hurdles; Phylicia Person, third in the high jump; Alejandra Molina, second in the discus; James Rasmussen, second in the javelin, and Virgil Sampson, third in the 800.
Goldendale
Eight personal records that were also first place finishes, helped Goldendale win five of six match-ups against Highland, Granger and White Swan last week. The boys won against all three schools, while the girls were one point short of a sweep, losing by a point to Highland.
Setting new PRs in winning performances were: Krystal Giese (13.1 in the 100), Addie Christensen (14:34.52 in the 3200), Hannah Swigart (18.05 in the 100 hurdles), Mollie Barthlow (15-3 in the long jump), Torey Spaulding-Jimenez (11.87 in the 100), Asa Israel (11:01.44 in the 3200), Eric Dohrman (44-1 in the shot put), and Jacob McElravy (123-11 in the javelin). In addition to the PR wins, Swigart won the 300 hurdles and pole vault. Israel was a double winner, as he dominated the 800 and Barthlow won two by winning the triple jump.
Other winning performances came from Irene Goble in the 400, Nikki Williams in the discus; Wade Plumlee in the discus; and relay wins by the boys 4x400 team of Spaulding-Jimenez, Israel, Dalton Jaekel, and Cody Herbeholz; and the girls 4x200 relay team of Swigart, Giese, Goble, and Barthlow.
The Timberwolves were in action at Mattawa on Saturday. Israel was a triple winner in the 400, 800 and 1600-meter events. His 400 time of 54.58 was a new PR. As if he hadn’t run far enough, Israel also ran in the 3200 and finished second in a new best time of 10:34.
Other winners for Goldendale were Dohrman, adding an inch to his PR in the shot put, Wade Plumlee with a best throw of 117-2 in the discus; Mollie Barthlow, double winner in the long jump and triple jump; Krystal Giese in the 200; and Swigart, who set a new personal mark in the high jump.
Giese was also second in the 100, while Goble had a pair of second place finishes in the 400 and 800-meter events.
Lyle-Wishram
Personal records fell in Moro, as many of the younger athletes at county schools began to settle in and master their events. Brittany Price, Henry Matai and Brian Neifert, of Lyle-Wishram are prime examples, as they set a total of seven personal records at the Sherman County Invitational, Saturday. All three Cougars are freshmen, and their performances have been very competitive.
Price set a new mark for herself in the javelin, with a winning toss of 97-6. She was sixth in the 400 in a PR 1:13.64, and 13th in the discus with a best of 64-11.
Matai is developing as the guy to beat in the high hurdles. He won on Saturday, with a 16.53. He was fourth in discus, where he has made steady, rapid progress, setting new PRs in each of his last two meets. Matai also ran on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Neifert set a PR in the 1500 (5:26.99 for seventh), the triple jump (34-1.5 for 10th), and long jump (16-7.5 for 12th).
Other great performances at Moro were a win by Robbie Phelps in the 400, second place in the 400 for Jim Price. Exchange students are scoring well for Lyle-Wishram, with a second in the 200 for Jessica Meier, third in the 800 for Elisa Carneiro, and Lisa Donath placed second place with a new PR in the long jump (16-0.5), and third place for a PR in the 400 (1:08.54).
Klickitat
Also in Moro, Klickitat sophomore, Zoe Lindner set a new mark for herself in the shot put with a fifth place finish at 29-10. Her 93-3 toss in the discus was eight inches behind her best. PRs also fell for Klickitat youngsters, sophomore, Matthew Brewer (triple jump, javelin, and 100 meters), and freshman, Dion Curtis (shot put, and javelin).
Trout Lake-Glenwood
Trout Lake-Glenwood sent athletes to Stevenson’s Al McKee Invitational where Dave’y Lumley, Kristian Rubesh, Tyler Cope and Kindra VanLaar won events. Cope, a sophomore hurdler, won the 110 with a new PR of 16.78 and was fifth with his best in the 300 at 46.4.
Lumley, Rubesh and VanLaar are seniors. Lumley destroyed the competition in discus, with a throw of 105 feet, 16 feet better than the second place mark. Lumley was second in the javelin, and third in the shot put.
VanLaar won the pole vault at eight-feet, and was fifth in the 100. Rubesh was also a pole vault winner, clearing 10-6.
Freshmen came through with great performances. Claiming second place in the 3200 meters for girls was Jessie Robertson, while Alec England was fourth in the 800 and third in the 1600-meter races, both PRs for England. Tasha Johnson, was eighth in the discus with a PR of 65-7.
White Salmon meet
Klickitat and Lyle-Wishram participated in the White Salmon track meet on April 17, winning 10 events.
Klickitat winners were Hershel Sanchey in the 3200 (9:46.26), Samantha Brewer in the 100 and 300 hurdles (16.95 and 51.03), and Jeromie Mason in the triple jump (39-5).

Rangers take pair from Goldendale

A disappointing split with Highland last week, took some of the edge off the match-up of Goldendale and Naches Valley, Saturday.
Perhaps everyone but Highland expected the Timberwolves to roll over the Scotties setting up Saturday’s battle of unbeaten teams. Nick Dohrman had enough on the mound to win his sixth game of the year, but Timberwolf bats were ice cold, and Highland became a bump in the road.
Matt Summers did it all for the Scotties, pitching a complete game and scoring two runs in their 2-1, upset win.
As cold as the Timberwolves were in game one, they were just as hot in game two, wearing out three Scottie pitchers on a 16 hit, 17-3 win. Aaron Brandt got the win and Aaron Cochran went 4-5 in the game.
Naches Valley
Saturday’s double header was still a battle of the top two SCAC west teams, but their positions had flip-flopped, with the Rangers still undefeated and Goldendale with a loss.
For most of the first game, Goldendale showed they could play with the defending champs. The Timberwolves closed to within a run after five innings, and Naches Valley got one back in the sixth. From that point on, Naches Valley’s bats erupted into a six-run seventh inning for a 13-5 win that carried over into game two, which they won 17-3.
The Rangers sent 19 batters to the plate in the third inning of the second game, scoring 13 runs off nine hits, two errors, four walks and one hit-batsman.
Goldendale started the second inning with a Cochran single, an Austin Ross double, and a Travis Schuster, two-run double. The only other bright spot was a home run by Dohrman in the third. The ball was hit so far that the fielders barely moved as it left Dohrman’s bat and sailed well beyond the right field fence
The Timberwolves played at Cle Elum on Tuesday and can finish the season in second place on Saturday when they host winless Granger in a double-header. Fourth and fifth place cross-over games will be played May 3, and the district play-offs start on May 6.
