Pair of upsets pits
Klickitat-TLG against Riverside Christian for Gorge league title
Lyle-Wishram had the momentum after sweeping Riverside Christian in Yakima, last Saturday, and defeating league-leading LaSalle the previous Tuesday. But the expected rematch against LaSalle in a game that would send the winner to the regional tournament was derailed on Tuesday, by a pair of upset victories. In fact, both of the favorites are finished for the year.
Riverside Christian traveled to Lyle and jumped on the Cougars with a four-run first inning. The Crusaders scored in each of the first four innings, leading 9-1 after four. Lyle-Wishram had their own big inning, scoring four in the fifth, but Riverside Christian kept the last two innings scoreless.
The second upset of the day came from Klickitat-TLG, who knocked out LaSalle with a stunning 4-0 shutout. Details of the game were not available at press time.
What made the win so surprising was the pair of 10-0 losses suffered by the Vandals at the hands of LaSalle just three days earlier. The only bright spot in those two games was the great fielding of Dannan Kavanaugh, who made diving catches and threw a runner out at home from his center field position.
Proving nothing should be taken for granted, LaSalle claims the league season title with a 7-2 record and Lyle-Wishram is the runner-up at 6-3. However, the representative from the league, who will advance to the regional tournament will be the winner of Riverside Christian (4-6) versus Klickitat-TLG (3-7), which will be played in Yakima on Saturday.
Sanchey with triple win at tough Connell meet

Track is a team event, but it is the individual performances that are more important. Other than hardware for the school trophy case, the post-season rewards are based on individual performance, with the exception of relay teams.
The season has become more individual than usual for Klickitat’s Hershel Sanchey, as he continues to test himself against top runners, preparing to defend his distance running championships at State. Last week’s Connell meet was one of those tough tests.
Sanchey didn’t set any new records, but he won the 800 and 1600 meter races by about five seconds each, then destroyed the field in the 3200 with a 9:53, ahead of Toppenish’s Ben Villanueva’s 10:20.
As the season winds down, other schools are also testing their athletes, looking to peak for districts.
Connell meet
Goldendale and Klickitat sent teams to the Connell meet and came home with 20 PR’s, most notable being Tia Spino’s 89-7 javelin, which was more than 13 feet beyond her previous best.
Several Goldendale athletes also made big jumps in performance. Shot putters, Eric Dohrman and Nikki Williams, each set new PRs. Dohrman placed fifth, upping his personal record by 12.75 inches, to 45-5.25. Williams’ toss of 28-2.5 was 10.25 inches beyond her previous best.
Others from the two schools who placed in the top eight for points were: Goldendale’s Irene Goble in the 800, Wade Plumlee in the discus, Hannah Swigart in the pole vault (her first time over eight-feet), and Mollie Barthlow in triple and long jump; and Klickitat’s Samantha Brewer in the high hurdles.
Dancing for sport in Goldendale

Dance is the newest sport at Goldendale High School. Under the direction of Coach Gina McCabe, a team of 11 girls plus two alternates, will compete next winter for the right to advance to state competition.
Dance was performed through this winter as a club activity, awaiting approval as an official sport at GHS. The requirements were met last week and Coach McCabe was given thumbs up to proceed with the sport.
The following girls were selected for the team: Chelsea Akins, Nellie Bilderback, Felicia Budde, Chelsey Caldwell, Ayla Cardo, Moriah Clark, Sierra Davis, Trisha Dollarhyde, Marina Minne, and Chelsea Osborne. Donna Beierele and Ashtyn Passenger are alternates. Team members will attend a four-day, dance team camp at Portland State University, conducted by the Portland Trailblazer’s Blazer Dancers. In addition to school events, the dance team has performed at community events and for civic groups.
The new team is expected to perform at the Klickitat County Fair, and GHS football and basketball games. Dance teams compete in league, district and state competition, similar to other sports. |
