First football camp draws future Wolves

ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN
Reporter

Already looking toward the future, Goldendale’s new head football coach, Don Strother, put together a football clinic, which he hopes will become an annual event. The clinic ran June 9-12 and was open to grades three-seven.
While the clinic was open to anyone interested in developing football skills, most of the attendees were boys from Goldendale and Centerville. Each participant received a Future Timberwolf T-shirt at the end of the camp.
Helping with position drills and end-of-day scrimmages were assistant coachs Lyle Stevens, D. J. Tuning, and several players who will suit up for Goldendale this year.
Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rules state that coaches cannot interact with student athletes between July 31, and first practice, which is August 20.

Sharpshooters don’t miss at state shootout

Continuing their dominance in shooting sports competition, the Goldendale Sharpshooters placed well at the State 4-H shotgun and air rifle competition on May 31.
Mason Steen was victorious in the shotgun, junior age division, and David Gunkel won the junior division of air rifle.
Also placing at the event were Grant Gunkel, second in junior air rifle, and D.J. Lennon, who was second in the intermediate division. David and Grant finished first and second, respectively, for overall high point across all age divisions.
The four club members earned the trip to State with their earlier performance in the regional competition, held in Ellensburg. Lennon, Steen, and David Gunkel were winners in that event, with Grant Gunkel finishing second.
The 4-H club is led by Dana Gunkel, Lee Cacy, and Bill Campbell. Grants from the Harry Burcalow Endowment, Rapid Cable Communications, and the National Rifle Association have helped the club with equipment and expenses.
