Lady Wolves sweep Royal and Wahluke

The Lady Timberwolves were as cold as the gym in the early going against Royal, last week. The Knights rolled to a 5-1 lead behind the shooting of Dani Callahan, who was good on a 24 foot shot and put up another long-range bomb a few minutes later.
About half-way through the opening quarter, Goldendale began to heat up and slowly gained control. Ashley Barrett operated in the key with impunity and the Timberwolf press created turnovers. Barrett put the Wolves up for good at 13-12 in the second quarter, and Callahan quit shooting.
As the half wound down, it looked like the Knights might not hit another basket, as they were stuck on 12 points since late in the first quarter. Sydney Bloom gobbled up defensive rebounds and had a steal to frustrate the Knights. With 1:48 left in the half, Royal finally got on the board.
Goldendale did pay a price for their aggressive defense putting Royal on the line for one-and-one opportunities, but the Knights weren’t able to capitalize, missing the front end on each trip to the line. Barrett had a buzzer-beater at the end of the half to make the score 23-14, Goldendale.
Royal generated opportunities with their press in the third quarter and narrowed the gap to 37-31 at the end of three. But Goldendale still had fewer turnovers in the quarter and kept their lead by having twice the scoring opportunities of Royal.
Goldendale regrouped in the final quarter, out-rebounding the Knights 13-8 and out-shooting them to the end.
Kylee Bellamy and Lexi Cameron scored off offensive rebounds, and Traci Bailey shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half to seal the win.
Friday night’s game against Wahluke had a similar score, but the outcome was never in doubt as the Wolves led by 15 points at the half. The Timberwolves were able to get 10 players on the scoreboard and valuable experience for reserves.
Sadie Shattuck was dominant inside with 15 points and seven rebounds. Tracie Bailey led all scorers with 16 points.

Timberwolf boys
Goldendale’s boys had to settle for a split last week, defeating Royal 40-22 and losing a close game to Wahluke, 54-48. The split leaves the Timberwolves 2-2 on the year with their final preseason game at Columbia-Burbank, last Tuesday. League play opens with Mabton visiting Goldendale on Dec. 19.
The Knights probably sensed it would be a long night, as the Timberwolves opened the game with five, three-point shots to post a 15-8 first quarter lead. Kaden Milliren, Austin Ross, Chase Wing, and Kane Thiele all hit from beyond the three-point line.
The second quarter had different results, as Goldendale was 0-4 from beyond the line. Cole Cameron added spark to the Timberwolf defense after the guns had cooled, and Goldendale beat Royal 6-5 in a low-scoring second quarter. Rebounds were nearly even for the quarter, and the teams combined for just three turnovers.
The third quarter was more defense, as the Knights scored just three points. Ross scored seven of Goldendale’s eight points and pulled down five rebounds in the quarter.
Ross continued to score in the final quarter, putting up six points to lead the Wolves with 18 points. Wing had seven points and Milliren had six from two first quarter, three-pointers.
The game at Wahluke was played evenly through the first 28 minutes, as both teams shot well from the floor. Goldendale was 52 percent through three quarters and the Warriors were 42 percent on the game.
Reed Lindhe was 2-3 and had three rebounds, Aaron Cochran was 2-2 from the floor, and Ross had five points to lead Goldendale in the first quarter.
Goldendale had a two point half-time lead off 10-18 shooting. But, fouls and turnovers kept Wahluke in the game, as they hit 10 shots off 27 first half attempts. Turnovers were 10-5 in favor of the Warriors.
Lindhe was hot again in the third quarter hitting all three of his shots. The rest of the team was just 1-8, as the cool down began. The game was tied at 37 as the final period began.
Juan DeLaGarza was the hero of the game for Royal. The Warrior guard went down with a sprained ankle, but returned in time to score eight points for Wahluke down the stretch for the win.
Ross led Goldendale scorers with 14 points, followed by Lindhe with 11. Saturday’s game against Warden was cancelled due to weather.

Bickleton teams stay unbeaten in preseason
Bickleton’s boys and girls teams were each 4-0 after last week’s games against non-league opponents, Liberty Christian JV and Kahlotus.
The Pirate boys had to come from behind against Liberty Christian, trailing 33-24 at the end of three quarters.
“Junior (Hernandez) clamped down on their point guard, and that’s what really got us going,” said Coach John Jensen.
The brother team of Nic and Andrew Venema came through at the end with Nic tieing the game and Andrew knocking down the game winner, 43-41.
Kahlotus was a walk in the park, by comparison, as the Koyotes lacked the depth to stay with Bickleton’s pressing defense. Bickleton won 50-28. The game was tight in the early going, but the Pirates outscored Kahlotus 12-1 over the final minutes of the second quarter.
The wide margin allowed the Pirates to clear the bench, giving the young team much needed experience. Eddie Molina scored 18 points and had 14 rebounds and seven steals. Andrew Venema scored 13 and had 17 rebounds.
The Lady Pirates were big winners against Liberty Christian, 56-39, and they rolled up Kahlotus 48-28. Katelynn Clinton scored 32 against the Patriots and 23 against the Koyotes. Star Kibby scored 13 against Liberty Christian and had six steals. Kibby scored 12 against Kahlotus and had three more steals.
Top rebounder for the Pirates was Clinton with 16 in the first game and 12 against Kahlotus.

Championship of Christmas Valley goes to Cougar boys
Lyle-Wishram traveled a long way to face their neighbors in the Christmas Valley tournament, played last weekend in the south-central Oregon town. Both of the Cougar teams, boys and girls, played in the championship game with the boys emerging as champions.
Klickitat’s Michael McConville was on-fire at Christmas Valley and Jeromie Mason was giving out the gifts with six assists, as the Vandals defeated North Lake, Ore., 70-65 in the first round of the tournament. McConville scored 32 points by hitting 8-13 from the three-point line. Mason directed the offense which had production from six players and key rebounding from Wade Ramsey, who pulled down 10 boards. Ron Prominski had 12 points and Mason and Matt Brewer each scored nine.
The Vandals lost the championship game to the Lyle-Wishram Cougars, 62-56. The Cougars made their way to the final game by defeating Prospect 83-45, taking advantage of their size with Mike Murphy scoring 20, Mike Eiesland 13, and Kyle Murphy 11. Adam Snyder poured in 16 with an inside-outside game to set up a Klickitat County final, in a town located southeast of Bend.
The same three players led the Cougars against the Vandals, who Coach Joe Bales described as lacking energy from the previous night’s tough game. The half-time rest allowed Klickitat to outscore Lyle-Wishram, 16-8 for a tie at the end of three quarters. Mason led Klickitat’s offense, dishing out eight assists and pulling down seven rebounds. McConville had 19 points. Brewer and Prominski added nine points each. Mike Murphy’s 19 points and 15 rebounds led the way for the Cougars.

Girls
The Lyle-Wishram girls’ basketball team earned a shot at the championship of the tournament at Christmas Valley, with a 33-19 win over Prospect on Friday. The Lady Cougars fell behind 5-0 before recovering from a five-hour bus trip, and took the first quarter lead 13-5. Teaera Churchwell lead a balanced Cougar offense with six points. Taylor Freemantle scored five and five girls scored four points each. Lexi Becker and Jennifer Benash controlled the boards with seven and five rebounds, respectively.
The championship game was played against North Lake, who knocked off Klickitat in the opening round, 62-41. The Cougars were intent on working their defense to shut down North Lake’s big gun, Coleen Hunt, who was scoreless in the first quarter. Trailing by 12 at the end of three quarters, the Cougars ran out of gas and the Cowboys forced them into a gambling, man defense. North Lake pulled away in the end, winning 47-26. Karlee Roth led the Cougars with nine points.
Klickitat, playing without point guard, Kali Fargher, was slow out of the gate against North Lake, falling behind by 13 in the first quarter. Samantha Brewer led the team in scoring with 24 points. Zoe Lindner had 11 points and three steals in the losing cause. Klickitat finished out the tournament on a high point, winning the consolation game against Prospect, 45-42, but it wasn’t easy. The Vandals let Prospect back into the game after leading by 11 at the end of three quarters.
The Cougars took a two-point lead with 1:24 left in the game. Lara Parsons tied it at 40 on two free-throws and Tia Spino slammed the door shut with a big, three-point shot. Parsons led the team in rebounds with 14 and Brewer blocked five shots.
