Mike Eiesland rebounded from a so-so start in Lyle-Wishram's opener against Stevenson to pitch a 16 strikeout, no-hitter against South Wasco County, on Saturday. Four batters reached base on three walks and one hit-by-pitch, but all four were stranded in the 9-0 shutout.
The opener against Stevenson on Thursday was a 5-4 win for the Cougars, giving Dylan Davis his first win of the season in relief of Eiesland. Eiesland was a little shaky with his control, walking four batters in his four innings of work and the defense coughed up three errors. But the Cougars came through when it counted most.
Six players got hits, including freshman Trey Kitchens who had two RBI. Stevenson's Dean Powell led off the seventh inning with a rocket to the gap, destined for extra bases, but centerfielder, Mike Murphy extended his 6-4 frame and made a diving catch to stop the threat.
The second game against South Wasco County was shortened by rain with the Cougars holding a 6-3 lead through four innings. Murphy got the start and gave up no hits, but had trouble finding the strike zone, giving up three runs off nine walks. Davis was sharp in his second appearance, giving up no runs and no hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
The Cougars traveled to Carson for a return game against Stevenson on Wednesday, and host another Oregon team when Sherman County visits Lyle at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Kylee Bellamy and Ryell Carley are proving to be well-matched as a doubles team for the Timberwolves, winning both of their first matches of the year, 6-1, 6-0 against La Salle and 6-1, 6-1 against Ki-Be. Both girls were singles players last year, Bellamy making it to the State meet. The two seniors are the most experienced pair and while it is still early in the season, they have made a smooth transition from singles to doubles play.
The wins by Bellamy and Carley helped the girls' team to a pair of 3-2 wins. All three doubles won against La Salle, with Sierra Davis and Rachel Kipfer showing grit in a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win. The third pair, Tayler Bradley and Nanna Olsen won 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Against Ki-Be, Olsen teamed with Felicia Budde for 6-2, 6-0 wins.
The Timberwolf boys lost to La Salle 3-2 with wins coming from doubles teams Chase Wing and Fletcher Wilhite, and Dillion Beierle and Zack Shattuck.
Singles players Sonny Hammack and Bryan Milberger reversed their fortune against Ki-Be, each posting two set wins. Hammack by 6-4, 6-3, and Milberger winning 6-4, 6-2. Beierle and Shattuck won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Wing and Wilhite rolled over their opponents 6-0, 6-1.
Coach Carla Wilkins attributes the success of her number one pairs of Bellamy-Carley and Wing-Wilhite to control of the matches by "setting up points and putting the ball away at the net."
The team was in Naches on Tuesday and will host Highland Saturday with match time 10 a.m.

Being young isn't much of a handicap for Goldendale's track team, which depended on freshman and sophomore points to win the boys' side of the Simcoe Invitational and finish second among the girls.
Sophomore, Kyle Welsh had a great meet on Saturday in Goldendale, winning the 200 and 400 meter races and anchoring the winning 4x400 team. Welsh also collected second place points in the 300 hurdles.
Welsh's victory in the 200 was one of the top efforts of the day. Welsh made up the stagger and battled Tanis Meilke, of River View, beating the Panther runner by two-tenths of a second with a lean through the tape. Four runners were within a half second on Welsh's 24.82 winning time.
Freshmen Braydon Ross (third in shot put, third in javelin, fifth in discus, sixth in pole vault), Kurt Wilkins (third in discus, fourth in shot put, seventh in pole vault), and Cody Magnuson (third in 400, fifth in 100) collected crucial points for the team which finished ahead of Bickleton 183 to 86.
It was a great day for Bickleton as well, as they took the measure of River View, Columbia-Burbank, Wapato, and Sherman County boys.
Andrew Venema won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and was second in the high jump. Eddie Molina was also a double winner, taking the shot put and discus, while finishing fifth in the high jump. Patrick Maeder cleared 10-6 to win the pole vault and finished second in the triple jump and third in the 300 hurdles, new events for the Pirate senior.
Goldendale's senior boys also held up their end, with Asa Israel winning the 1600 and finishing second in the pole vault. His most dramatic performance, however, was on the third leg of the 4x400. Israel ran down a Wapato runner who was staked a big lead. When he passed the baton to Welch, it was Goldendale who just needed to hang on for an easy win.
Also posting wins for Goldendale were seniors Tyler Hunziker in the high jump and long jump, and Jacob McElravy in the Javelin with a toss of 127-6.
Goldendale's girls team finished second behind an experienced Sherman County squad. Leading the way with great performances for the Wolves were two, quick freshmen Carlee Wheelon and Sarah Lancaster. Wheelon was second in the 100, .33 seconds behind Sherman County's Caitlin von Borstel and .19 seconds ahead of Lancaster in third. Wheelon also was third in the 200, and fifth in the long jump. Lancaster placed third in two other events, the 100 hurdles and the long jump.
Other youngsters to collect points for Goldendale were freshmen Sienna Gray (third in shot put), Camilia Richards (eigth in javelin), and Lexy Knowlton (sixth in long jump and seventh in 200 meters). Sophomores Sadie Shattuck and Irene Goble scored second place finishes in the shot put and 400, respectively. Shattuck was also fourth in discus and Goble placed sixth in the 800. Goldendale's lone senior girl to score points was Hannah Swigert, third in shot, high jump and pole vault and eighth in discus.
Bickleton's Katelynn Clinton was a double winner with a 4-8 high jump and her first 100 foot discus throw of 100-10. Clinton was also fourth in the shot put and part of the 4x200 team of Danielle Raschko, Nakai Kibby and Star Kibby, which finished second.
Raschko was an easy winner in the 3200 with a solid sub-fourteen minute run. Star Kibby won the triple jump and was second in the pole vault at 7-6, much lower than her usual jump. Nakai Kibby had a pair of seventh places for shot put and discus. Alejandra Molina was second in the discus and sixth in the shot. |
