Price among state leaders in javelin

The first track meet after spring break, the Condon Invitational, produced many season best performances by athletes from Lyle-Wishram, Klickitat and Trout Lake-Glenwood. Best of all was Brittany Price's 126-7 javelin toss, nearly 20 feet more than her previous best, 106-8.
Price is well ahead of the next best throw for 2B girls, and is ninth best in the state behind five 4A athletes and girls in 1A and 2A schools including Jordin Seekins, of Washougal who has a 140-11 throw this year. Price, a sophomore, would need to add about another 10 feet over the next two years to take the school title from Lindsey Blaine, who went on to become an NCAA champion at Purdue.
Also dominating among the girls at Condon was Klickitat's Samantha Brewer who entered four events and won four events. Brewer had her best of the year in the high jump, clearing 5-2, and also won the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump.
Teaera Churchwell, of Lyle-Wishram, and Neola Putnam, of TLG, were each double winners. Churchwell won the 200 and 400 sprints, while Putnam put away the field in the 800 and 1,500 meter events.
The times were season bests for both girls, but not their best in those events. Putnam says she is a little behind in her progress this year, mainly due to inactivity. But her form and conditioning is good and times will be coming down as the frequency of competition picks up.
The Lyle-Wishram boys had a strong showing at Condon, particularly in the track events. Ty Freemantle, Robbie Phelps, Jim Price and Henry Matai won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Freemantle also was first in the 100, edging Phelps at the tape, and was the winner of the 400. Phelps and Price also led the field in the 200, with Phelps getting the win and Price finishing second.
Price was the class of the shot put, his 42-foot toss nearly two feet further than the second place finisher. Matai was the winner of the 110 hurdles and Jose Martinez gave the Cougar boys their eighth win in the 800.
It was a different race than Martinez is accustomed to running. At the sound of the gun, Martinez was off the line in a sprint to the front. By the 200 meter mark, he was far ahead of the pack, with teammate Steven McClusky parrying Brad Garner, of South Wasco, for second place.
"I don't know, I just took off and decided to kill them off in the beginning," said Martinez.
In three races, Martinez has turned in a pair of 2:19 races to go with the 2:20.5 at Condon. McClusky had a good sprint to the finish, but was a tenth of a second behind Garner, finishing third.

The Goldendale boys' tennis team had it's best outing of the young season with a 5-0 shutout over Naches Valley prior to spring break.
Bryan Milberger and Sonny Hammack swept their singles opponents. Milberger had a perfect 6-0, 6-0. Chase Wing and Fletcher Wilhite won in straight sets, and Nathan Clark and Adrian Sanchez overcame an opening set loss to win 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
The girls weren't as fortunate, falling 5-1 to the Rangers. The team of Rachel Kipfer and Tayler Bradley overcame a 6-2 loss in the opening set to win on 6-4, 7-5 sets.
The Mar. 28 match against Highland was only partially complete when persistent rains forced the teams to call it a day. The matches will be completed at a later date.

Equestrian teams top several events in Wenatchee
Goldendale's High School equestrian club brought home three first place trophies at their second district meet, in Wenatchee. The drill team made it two wins in a row. Team members are Heather Ault, Lauren Hoodenpyl, Jessica Kaseberg, Holli Mansfield, Alyson Mello, Amber Mercer, Jackie Miller and Alex Wooden.
Mello was also a winner in break-away roping and working rancher. Her teammates Hailey Hudson and Nikki Williams finished tied for second in working rancher. Hudson was the winner of steer daubing with Mello placing sixth.
Another win was logged by the sorting team of Miller and Jessica Telford. Mercer and Hoodenply placed fifth in the event.
Other placings for the team were fifth in jumping by Kaseberg, fifth for the team of Mansfield, Mercer, Telford and Wooden in in-hand obstacle relay, and fifth for the Canadian Flags team of Hudson, Mello, Kaseberg and Telford. Telford also rode to a seventh place finish in dressage.
The team has one more meet on May 1-3 in Wenatchee, before the state meet in Pasco.
