Cougars search for consistency from young team

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

It was an up and down week for Lyle-Wishram's baseball team last week. The team pounded South Wasco 19-1, then dropped a pair to a tough Dufur team, 5-3 and 13-11.
The South Wasco game was a blow out in the first inning when Lyle-Wishram scored 10 runs. They came up with another nine in the third, allowing Dylan Davis and Mike Eiesland to freewheel on the mound and give up just one run. Several Cougars had big days. Ty Freemantle had a grand slam homerun, Eiesland was 4-4 with a double, a triple and six RBI, Chris Wolff was 3-5 with a double and, Kiele Wiseman was 2-2 with a double. Davis got the win with three innings of two-hit ball.
The Cougars are a young team that shows flashes of great hitting and flashes of inexperience on the basepath and in the field. The team was younger than usual on Saturday at Dufur, with three starters missing, nobody on the bench and two-eighth-graders in the line-up.
The double-header was a display of good and bad. The team had spurts of good pitching and good hitting around dropped balls and base-running mistakes. On the bright side, the team never quit and the eighth graders, Ricky Wolff and Dustin Mutch got on base and were good in the field.
Eiesland went the distance in the opener and was sharp after getting tagged for three runs in the first inning. The senior ace struck out 12 batters and gave up six hits. But, the Cougars could manage just two hits in the 5-3 loss.
Game two was wild with scoring, the teams combining for 24 runs. But, there were only 15 hits and 11 errors, six by the Cougars and five by Dufur. Chris Wolff was hit by pitches in three straight trips to the plate, as both teams struggled.
Lyle-Wishram was down 13-5 when they came alive in the fifth, scoring three runs, triggered by an Eiesland triple.
It was more of the same when Calvin Burnham drove a ball into the left-center field gap for a bases-loaded triple in the sixth. Burnham was picked off third base with one out, and the comeback stalled.
Goldendale's junior varsity will play a double header in Lyle on Thursday. League play moves into high gear with a trip to La Salle on April 21 and eight more league games in a span of 15 days.

Herin tosses a gem at Granger Garrigus gun preserves win

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Cody Herin is quickly earning the confidence of his manager, Lyle Stevens, with another great outing that cements the junior's place in Goldendale's rotation.
Herin is also getting it done with his bat, collecting six hits last week as the Timberwolves beat River View in a make-up game, then went to Granger to sweep the opening games of league play.
River View
Tuesday's game in Goldendale was the second of a double-header interrupted by rain, last month. Goldendale lost the first game, but finished strong in a 11-6 game two win.
Herin was 3-4 with two doubles and four RBI to lead the 13 hit attack. He wasn't the only player who was hot at the plate. Anthony Dobson was 3-3, and two-hit games were turned in by Aaron Cochran and Trevor Fields.
Goldendale scored three runs in the first inning and held on through a wild day on the mound by Cochran, who hit six batters and walked four in three innings of work. A five-run sixth inning sealed the win.

Granger
Goldendale rode a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning at Granger, but nearly blew the game, as the Spartans dialed up five runs in the seventh.
Mitchell Zapien hit a two out, two-run double to right center. But the would-be tying runner tried to stretch it into a triple and was gunned down by Justin Garrigus to preserve the 10-9 win.
Herin was stellar in the second game, giving up six hits and striking out 12 batters in six innings. The game was blown open with eight and 10 run innings in the sixth and seventh for a 22-3 Timberwolf win.
Fields was 3-6 with three RBI, Jaryd Cline had two doubles and four RBI
