Timberwolves crush pitching with 38 runs, 35 hits in three games
Herin homers, Cochran doubles in each game

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Goldendale remained undefeated with a sweep of Highland, last Saturday 10-8 and 16-6, as the team rounds into form, hoping to upset Naches Valley next Tuesday in Goldendale. But, things didn't look so rosy for the Timberwolves as the Scotties scored in four of the first five innings and led 8-5 in the top of the seventh.
Trevor Fields started a seventh inning rally with a lead-off single, and Aaron Cochran got on by error. That brought up red-hot Cody Herin, who drove a fastball over the center field fence to tie the game.
Two outs later, Blake Lesko was hit by a pitch and Jose' Briseno worked out a walk. Lesko and Briseno advanced on a passed ball with Jaryd Cline at bat. Cline then drove a two-run single to put the Wolves up by two.
Tyrell Cronin shut the Scotties down with no runs and no hits over the last two innings for his second win of the year.
The come back seemed to have stunned the Scotties, who were shelled for 11 runs in the first inning of game two. Herin added to his RBI total of six in the two games, with a two-run blast in the first inning of game two.
John Barkowski joined the fun with a two-run shot in the seventh inning to cap the rout. Fields got the win, his third of the season.
Cochran was 5-7 with five RBI in the two games. Bartkowski was 5-8, and seven other Wolves contributed to the onslaught.
In an earlier game, Bartkowski used his head to send the game winning run across the plate against Wapato.
The game was a wild one with teams combining for 25 hits and Goldendale winning 13-12 in a game interrupted by hail.
Goldendale pulled out the win with another big seventh inning rally. Cochran doubled in two runs to make the score 12-11 in favor of Wapato. The game was tied on a weird play when Justin Garrigus hit a bases loaded grounder to the pitcher. Fields was forced out at home, but the catcher's throw to first hit Garrigus, allowing Cochran to score the tying run.
With the bases loaded and two out, Bartkowski was beaned with a curve ball, allowing Herin to come home with the winning run.
The Timberwolves needed to get past Zillah on Tuesday and will travel to Cle Elum on Saturday.

Cougars and Wolves mix it up in Lyle

The Lyle-Wishram baseball team rolled over Goldendale's junior varsity in a double header in Lyle, last week.
Hot bats and overpowering pitching ended the first game in five innings, 18-1. Mike Eiesland allowed just one base-runner due to a walk in his three innings of work. Eiesland struck out six batters and gave way to Trey Kitchens in the fourth.
Mike Murphy was 2-2, both hits doubles, for Lyle-Wishram. Chris Wolff had a double and knocked in three runs. Keale Wiseman also doubled and drove in two runs.
Nolin Bare had the only hit for Goldendale.
The Timberwolves got their confidence back in game two when they tied the score in the top of the third inning, 2-2. Lyle-Wishram went up with a run in the bottom of the inning, and got three in the fourth.
Pitching controlled the game to the end and Lyle-Wishram got the win 7-3.
Ty Freemantle was 2-3 with a triple and Wolff had a pair of doubles in three at bats. Cougar first baseman, James Jackson doubled on a 3-3 day at the plate.
Goldendale was led by Michael Trunkey who doubled and was 2-4 in the game.
The Cougars dove into league play on Tuesday at LaSalle and play a double header Saturday in White Swan. A single game will be played at Riverside Christian on April 28, before finishing the year with five games at home.

Soccer team gives Warden a scare

Signs of progress are important for Goldendale's soccer team, which still has a ways to go to be competitive in the tough SCAC league. Saturday's 6-3 loss to Warden showed signs of progress, as the Timberwolves took the lead at the three-minute mark and held on for the next seven minutes.
Warden fought back, but so did Goldendale and the match was tied 2-2 at half time. The Cougars owned the second half, but left Goldendale knowing they needed to play their best to win. Goldendale had a pair of goals scored by Inan Ekici on assists from Kyle Cairns. Alejandro Armenta scored the third, unassisted.
Earlier in the week, Goldendale hosted an excellent Highland team that used quickness and great footwork to score three goals in each half. Armenta managed 13 saves for the Timberwolves.
Goldendale hosts Naches Valley on Thursday and Mabton on Saturday. The final home match is on Tuesday against Granger.
