Long-awaited Wolf win

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

"It feels great," said Kyle Cairns, as he and Connor Harris celebrated Goldendale's first SCAC soccer victory.
It was no doubt an understatement about the feelings the two seniors must have felt after enduring loss after loss as Goldendale ventured into soccer as a sport, three years ago. The Timberwolves defeated Naches Valley, last Friday, 3-2 in a very physical match.
Goldendale beat the Rangers to the ball, something that has been lacking as many of the relatively novice players have been cautious to avoid mistakes. The front line kept pressure on Naches Valley throughout the match. In particular, Omar Estrada and Inan Ekici were too quick for the Rangers. Estrada had numerous runs at goal before getting the tying and winning goals.
But it was a team effort. Baldomero Estrada on the left and Dylan Powers on the right muscled their way in and fed the ball to the middle time and again. Coach Jimmy Dick commented on how "Powers put the pressure on everywhere."
Also applying pressure in the middle was Cairns, who scored the first goal for Goldendale on a penalty kick after the Ranger goalie, Henry VanderHouwen took down Ekici, playing the man instead of the ball, according to the official.
The Timberwolf defense was also quick to the ball, with exception of a couple of lapses, which the Rangers turned into a 2-0, first half lead. Billy Monroe was particularly on his game, using his size to counter the pushing and bumping attack of the Rangers.
The go-ahead goal was set-up by a foul against the Rangers for pushing Cairns out along the sidelines. Cairns' free kick curved into the middle, where Baldomero Estrada directed it to Omar Estrada who sent it to the back of the net.
Goldendale had a day to savor the win before being stifled in their attempt to make it two in a row against Mabton. The Vikings took a 5-1 win. Goldendale's only goal was by Ekici at the 70 minute mark.
Granger played in Goldendale on Tuesday and the Wolves travel to league leading Highland on Thursday.

Road losses to Warriors put Wolves in tough spot

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

A pair of losses to Cle Elum on Saturday put a damper on any hopes the Goldendale Timberwolves had about challenging Naches Valley in the SCAC west. The Rangers were in Goldendale on Tuesday for a match-up of the number one and number two teams, but a split with Zillah followed by the Cle Elum losses left Goldendale three games back in the loss column at 5-3.
Five errors in the first game against Zillah could come back to haunt the Timberwolves, who lost the game 7-5 with five unearned runs scored by the Leopards. Trevor Fields had an otherwise good outing giving up just three hits and striking out 10.
The second game was all Goldendale, behind an 11 strikeout performance by Cody Herin over five innings. Doubles were popular for the Wolves as Herin hit two, as did J.D. Moss. Trevor Fields and Blake Lesko also doubled in the 11-5 victory.
Errors popped up again at Cle Elum. Goldendale gave up a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning, but six errors in the game helped the Warriors open up a nine-run lead after five innings and then cruised to a 16-7 win.
The second game went to Cle Elum 7-5. Fields was 2-3, Justin Garrigus was 2-4 and Aaron Cochran and Herin each drove in runs off hits, but it wasn't enough.

Cody Carlson sets Lyle sprint records at Lions' Twilight meet

The weather warmed up and so did the athletes at the Goldendale Lions Club 35th annual twilight invitational, last Friday. A number of athletes topped the minimum standards in their events with districts almost a month away.
Cody Carlson ran a blazing 11.1 for a new Lyle school record in the 100, and followed it with another record in the 200 with a 22.81 time. Carlson took a third, first place as part of Lyle-Wishram's 4x400 relay team along with Robbie Phelps, Jim Price and Ty Freemantle.
Goldendale's Ty Hunziker was also a three event winner, edging Bickleton's Andrew Venema in the high jump by clearing 6-0 to Venema's 5-8. The standard for 1A high jump is 6-1. Hunziker also won the long jump, going over the 20 foot milestone at 20-1, and he won the triple jump with a 40-2 effort.
The top winning girl was Klickitat's Samantha Brewer who exceeded state standards for 1B in the high jump, going 5-0, and the 100 hurdles at 16.1. Brewer also won the triple jump with a 31-6 leap.
Double winners were Goldendale's Asa Israel in the 800 and 1600, Anna Schmid, of TLG, besting the 200 standard at 26.96, and winning the 400, and Lyle-Wishram's relay team members Price (doubling with a 45-1 shot put) and Phelps who went 12 feet in the pole vault, which is also above the 2B standard.
Other standard-beating wins were Tyler Cope (TLG) 15.97 in the 110 hurdles, Teaera Churchwell (Lyle-Wishram) 12.86 in the 100, Neola Putnam (TLG) 11:59.29 in the 3200, Star Kibby (Bickleton) 8-6 in the pole vault, Liz Vogt (TLG) 16-5.5 in the long jump, and Katelynn Clinton (Bickleton) 103-5 in the discus. Clinton also claimed the Bickleton high jump record with a 4-10 jump, bettering the record held by her mother, Kim (Naught) Clinton.
