Columbia and TLG win the battle of county track teams

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Bickleton doesn't host track meets, so the team pole vaulters must have some other track as their favorite. It might be Glenwood.
For the second straight year, Star Kibby and Patrick Maeder have come out on top in Glenwood, setting new personal records.      Personal records have become school records and each vaulter added to their school's best marks at Friday's meet.
Kibby vaulted 9-2, to up her record by a half inch. Maeder had more of a challenge. He locked horns with Lyle-Wishram's Robbie Phelps just days after each of them set school marks of 12-7. Phelps looked like he had Maeder at 12 feet, when Maeder missed, giving Phelps a loss in hand. But Maeder made the height in his third attempt.
A meeting to decide the next height was an easily agreed 12-8, to go for new school records. This time it was Maeder who was over on his second jump and Phelps came up short. Maeder made three attempts to boost the record to 13 feet, but that will have to wait for later.
It was a good meet for Bickleton with the boys finishing third and the girls fourth. Andrew Venema was a triple winner with firsts in high jump (5-10), 300 meter hurdles, and a thrilling win in the 110 hurdles. The event was much anticipated, pitting Venema against two outstanding hurdlers in Lyle-Wishram's Henry Matai and TLG's Tyler Cope, who won the match-up last time out in Goldendale.      Cope and Matai littered the track with downed hurdles as they gave their all, only to be edged by Venema who ran a 15.89. Matai clocked 15.90 and Cope crossed in 16.1.
Bickleton also had wins by Danielle Raschko and Junior Hernandez in the 3200, and Katelynn Clinton in the discus. Clinton also ran the anchor of the 4x200 relay, running down TLG for second place by one-tenth of a second.
TLG continued their streak of girls' victories, winning six events. Triple winners were Neola Putnam (800, 1600, 4x400 relay) and Liz Vogt (long jump, 200, 4x400). Anna Schmid won the 300 hurdles and was part of the 4x400 relay.
The boys' team winner was Columbia (White Salmon), by nearly 11 points over Lyle-Wishram. The Bruins had fewer wins than Bickleton, but placed a number of athletes high in the points to get the win. Ty Plummer was a dual winner for Columbia in the shot and discus. Columbia also knocked off Lyle-Wishram in the 4x100 due to a lane violation by the Cougars.
Otherwise, it was another fast time of 45.3 for the relay champs. They made no mistake in the 4x400, winning it going away with nearly a school record 3:34.4. Cody Carlsen was king of the sprints again, winning the 100 in 11.3 and the 200 in 22.8. Double winner for the Lyle-Wishram girls was Teaera Churchwell who took the 100 in 12.9 and 400 in 1:03.2.
Klickitat had its usual wins from Samantha Brewer in the high jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles. They also got an upset win in the javelin from Ron Prominski, who knocked off Yakama Tribal's Robert Hicks. The Vandals also took second in the event as Chris Lambert threw 132-5 to Prominski's 135-4.
Goldendale was fourth with the boys' team and fifth with girls. Asa Israel won the 1600 in 4:33.2, Tyler Hunziker was first in the long jump at 20-4.5, and Sadie Shattuck continued to lengthen her best marks in the shot put with a winning toss of 32-11.5, for Goldendale.
Other first place performances were by Lyle-Wishram's Ty Freemantle in the 400, Jonathon Frost, of Columbia, in the 800, Tate Peterson, of Columbia, 38-11 in the triple jump, and Noehly Tzintzun, of White Swan, who won the javelin at 108-2.

Missed opportunity for Cougars against La Salle

Little things count is the message Lyle-Wishram could take home from their games against La Salle on Saturday. A sweep of the double-header was clearly within the Cougars' grasp, but little things let them down.
In game one, lack of hustle and throwing errors allowed the Lightning to post a 3-0 lead. Mike Murphy launched a three-run homerun in the bottom of the third inning, but instead of giving the Cougars a lead, it merely erased the earlier mistakes. La Salle earned a run in the fourth that was the difference in the 4-3 game.
Mike Eiesland took the loss, giving up six hits. The Cougars were held to just three hits in the game.
The bats got going in game two as Lyle-Wishram scored nine runs in the second inning, hitting back to back to back doubles by Ty Freemantle, Chris Wolff, and Murphy. But pitching stalled in the fifth inning and the Cougars couldn't protect an 11-1 lead. Five runs were scored in the fifth and eight more in the sixth giving La Salle a 14-11 win. Dylon Davis took the loss.
A sweep earlier in the week against Riverside Christian likely secured second place for the Cougars. Lyle-Wishram will either host or travel to Riverside Christian for the first game in district playoffs, and White Swan will play La Salle in Union Gap.

Soccer team out of post-season play

Goldendale's soccer team gave a good account of themselves against Granger last week, continuing to flex their new-found muscle on offense.
Inan Ikici put the Wolves on the board at 9:00 of the first half, but Granger went on top 3-1 by the break. Omar Estrada and Kyle Cairns scored back-to-back goals over a three minute span, early in the second half to tie the match. But Granger responded again to go up 7-3 with eight minutes left.
Conner Harris scored the final goal for Goldendale in the 7-4 loss. The Timberwolves out-shot the Spartans 15-13.
Two days later, the Timberwolves traveled to Cowiche to take on league leading Highland.      Goldendale outscored the Scotties 3-2 in the second half, but Highland had already run up a 7-0 lead for their 15th win against no losses. Goldendale goals were scored by Oscar Ocampa at the 66 and 70 minute marks, and Alejandro Armenta.
A match at Naches Valley on Tuesday carries no playoff implications, as neither team will finish in the top three required for district. However, it is a huge match for Goldendale, whose sole victory came in an earlier match against the Rangers. A Timberwolves win will put them in fourth place, a big step for the young team.
