Wanderscheid gets golfer of the year nod

Goldendale's Zach Wanderscheid was named golfer of the year for the second consecutive year by the Yakima Herald-Republic. The Timberwolf junior is the 1A State Champion and was fifth in the state last year.
Wanderscheid also competed in the U.S. Open qualifying round on June 8, but he came up short in the field of 36, with just the top two advancing to the Open.
"It was a tough course. They set it up like the U.S. Open course," said Wanderscheid. He shot rare scores of 84 and 79. Hard greens were a particular problem, as anything hitting the green was sure to run off.
"I wasn't playing well," said Wanderscheid. He was philosophic about the experience and expects to give it another try next year.
In the meantime, with the U.S. Open qualifier out of the way and school out for the summer, there was only one thing left to do. The Washington Junior Golf Association season began with a tournament on Monday in Kennewick, the first of four events he has entered between now and July 13.

Wildcat football camp a first at Lyle

Twenty-four grade school boys were eager participants in the first annual Wildcat Football Camp, held at the Lyle football field. The two-day camp was a full contact camp with equipment provided by the Dallesport Youth Football team.
Lyle-Klickitat-Wishram head football coach Don Smith put on the clinic with the help of assistant coaches, high school players and volunteers. The goals of the camp were to provide instruction in safe and proper football techniques and the fundamentals in offensive and defensive position play.      Specific instruction was given for quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, linebackers, secondary and defensive and offensive line play.
The camp was open to grades two-six in the Lyle, Klickitat and Wishram areas. Camp fee was $25 and each participant had a jersey to keep and feasted on a Saturday barbeque. The camp ran from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on June 12 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Proceeds from the camp go to the Lyle-Klickitat-Wishram football booster club, supporting middle and high school teams
