Little League finishes season that almost didn't happen

Last February it looked as if there might not be Little League baseball in Goldendale as nobody had stepped up to join the board and do the heavy lifting it takes to run the program. As it turns out, the program is alive and well, hopefully rejuvenated.
There were plenty of volunteers who came to the February meeting when an ad in The Sentinel suggested that the program would fold without help. Much of the group were new to the program and new to the area, but they got the job done, and last Saturday was the final tournament.
Nine teams competed on Saturday in Goldendale, including three teams from Klickitat, which operate under Goldendale's Little League charter. The winning minor teams were the Klickitat Knucklebusters (boys) and the Goldendale Shockers (girls).
Top players from the 9-10 and 11-12 divisions were invited to try out for all-star teams which will compete next month at districts in Pasco, hoping to take a shot at the Little League World Series. The 9-10 years old will play against Richland National at noon on July 3, while the older group plays East Valley at 2:30 p.m. on July 11. Organizers will be looking for support to help send the teams to Pasco. Little League rules prohibit the players from participating in more than one fund raiser during the season, which was already held.
The Board will meet soon to discuss the possibility of starting a coed team to utilize the ball fields through the summer. President of Goldendale Little League is Rebecca Randle. Susan and Del Hubbert umpired most of the games. Susan is a Little League certified umpire. The board is looking for more volunteers for next year's program. Help is needed in grounds maintenance, field prep, umpiring and coaching.
Kiwanis read greens so kids can read books
The Goldendale Kiwanis held their annual Golf for Kids fundraisers last Saturday with 90 golfers competing for a variety of prizes, but mainly looking to have fun and help the club with their favorite charity....books for kids. The event netted $4,200 for the Kiwanis' program. Books will be handed out at the Klickitat County Fair and various other events in the county.
PGE shot a best ball score of 59 to take the team title. There was also dart competition and a chance for non-golfers to kick back and socialize. Door prizes were distributed during the closing barbecue.
Klemmer tagged for Hank Ladiges buckle at Ketchum Kalf Rodeo
The 75th Ketchum Kalf Rodeo was held under sunny and cool skies last weekend in Glenwood. Winning the all-around cowboy honors was B.J. Campbell, of Benton City.
The rodeo is the premier community event, drawing on many volunteers, one of whom is honored each year with the Hank Ladiges memorial buckle. This year's honoree is Jim Clemmer. Clemmer has been involved in the rodeo since 1951.
