Swimmers collect awards from Oregon championship meet

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Nadia Smith of Goldendale came home with a fist full of medals from the Oregon swimming championships held in Albany, July 11 weekend. Smith and her sister, Jade and Goldendale teammate, Hannah Weeks competed in the meet. In addition, the relay team of the Smith girls, Weeks and Gracie McLoughlin competed in two relay events.
Nadia, age 9, had her best finish in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:19.38, almost a second better than her previous best time. She also had top 10 finishes in the 200 intermediate medley (fifth), 50 meter freestyle (sixth), 200 meter freestyle (eighth), 100 meter butterfly (ninth) and 50 meter backstroke (10th).
Jade, age 7, competed in the 100 meter freestyle, where she placed 16th and 50 meter breaststroke where she was 22nd.
Weeks, age 9, improved on her best times in the 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter breaststroke, finishing 12th and 20th, respectively.
The girls placed 14th in the 200 medley relay and 15th in the 200 freestyle relay.
There was also a meet in Pendleton over the same weekend. Another nine-year old, Alyssa Merry, of Goldendale competed for The Dalles team, finishing 15th in the 100 freestyle and 22nd in the 50 meter backstroke.

Vandals to join Timberwolves in football and baseball

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Goldendale's school board was unanimous in its acceptance of a request by Klickitat to join the Timberwolves for football and baseball during the up coming school year. The deal requires approval of the Yakima Valley Interathletic Association, which is expected to be given in the next couple of weeks.
Klickitat athletic director, Yvette Schultz had contacted the Goldendale school board with a letter earlier this month, stating that the school decided it could not afford the fee asked by Lyle school district for participation in their football program. In her address to the Goldendale school board on Monday night, she said Lyle was asking for $450 to $600 per person to help with their expenses.
Goldendale's acceptance includes no fee for participation. However, Schultz indicated that Klickitat was willing to use their bus to transport players to some away games. Schultz estimated that there are likely to be three Klickitat students who will be interested in playing football at Goldendale.
The change will be the third different arrangement in as many years for the Klickitat baseball players. In 2008, Klickitat had a very successful team playing out of Klickitat. The squad included some key players from Glenwood.
In 2009, there were not enough players in Klickitat to field a team. After being rebuffed by Lyle-Wishram, and initially rejected by Goldendale, they joined Columbia High School in White Salmon.      Later, Goldendale offered to take the Klickitat players, but the deal with Columbia had already been struck. Schultz indicated they appreciated the arrangement with Columbia, but the distance was a hardship on the students. The merger with Goldendale will be on a one-year trial basis.
In other business, the Goldendale school board accepted resignations of assistant football coaches Lyle Stevens and Takashi Atkins. They also approved the hiring of former head coach, Doyle Payne, as an assistant. Two other positions are to be filled.
