Soccer camp prelude to AYSO league play

Soccer may be gone at Goldendale High School, but it is alive and well as an independent sport.
The sixth annual AYSO sponsored soccer camp drew 24 young and enthusiastic players to learn the sport from United Kingdom International instructors. As with past camps, the kids were split into age-based skill groups, with the youngest learning the very basics of soccer, while the older players learned more advanced skills and techniques. This year's instructors were Tommy Marsden, from England and Ross Good, from Scotland.
Sign up for AYSO league play runs to Aug. 15. Thus far there are 121 registered. Teams will be formed for five age divisions. The first games are Sept. 12. Games are Saturday mornings starting at 9 a.m.
Volunteers are needed to help with field prep and refereeing. Contact the Goldendale pool at 509-773-0506.
Master Hunter advisory group needs members
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is accepting letters of interest through Sept. 30, for membership on the WDFW Master Hunter Advisory Group.
The group, which represents master hunters statewide, advises WDFW on issues and opportunities affecting master hunters and the Master Hunter Permit Program. Five volunteer positions are up for replacement early next year, including one representing Lewis, Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania, Wahkiakum and Klickitat counties and another at-large position representing any area of the state. Applicants must be certified master hunters and will serve three-year terms. The advisory group meets at least four times a year in Ellensburg. Members serve as volunteers and do not receive direct compensation for their work, but mileage reimbursement is currently available through a grant to the group.
Those applying are asked to answer three key questions: why they want to be a member, what qualifies them to be a member, and how they can help achieve the advisory group's vision. The letters must include permission for the WDFW to conduct a criminal background check, county of residence, and contact information (email, mailing address, and phone number(s).
More information about the Master Hunter program and the advisory group can be found at www.wdfw.wa.gov or by contacting Tracy Loveless at Tracy.Loveless@dfw.wa.gov or call (360) 902-8412.
Gun and Archery Club in need of a home
Finding a shooting range was the focus of discussion at the newly formed Klickitat Gun & Archery Club meeting, last Monday. The club requires enough space to facilitate shooting of rifles, pistols, bow and arrow, as well as shotguns. The club has a potential site, but has yet to determine if there is adequate room in the direction they need to shoot.
In other business, dues were set at $35 plus $25 for spouse and $25 for one minor family member. Family membership is $75. Members are required to join the NRA, which gives the club access to NRA grants and support.
Meetings are held on the fourth Monday, each month. The next meeting is Aug. 24, 7 p.m. at the PUD meeting room. Contact club president Ray Brown at 772-2744 for more information.
