Cougars put Knights to bed early

Lyle-Wishram racked up 28 first quarter points then coasted to a 42-6 win over Sunnyside Christian last Friday. The win added to homecoming festivities at Lyle, as the Cougars remain undefeated and are 1-0 in league action.
The visiting Knights were very tentative in the first quarter, looking like the first year team that they are. By the second quarter, Sunnyside Christian began to tighten up the interior defense, but the damage was done.
The Knights coughed up the ball on their first possession with Flo Forsthuber recovering for the Cougars. Two plays later, Henry Matai got Lyle-Wishram on the board with an 18 yard touchdown run. The Knights fumbled away their second possession, and this time it was Alan Matai racing 44 yards for a touchdown. An on-side kick recovered by Trey Kitchens had the Knights reeling at their 37.
The Cougars pounded them with Alan and Henry Matai runs, eventually scoring on a busted play. Forsthuber attempted a handoff, but the ball popped straight up. Henry Matai pulled down the loose ball and rumbled nine yards up the middle for his second touchdown. Alan Matai converted the two-point try and it was 20-0 with 4:20 left. Henry Matai would score three more times in the game and roll up 237 yards rushing. Alan Matai gained 103 yards on 11 carries.
One of the more impressive defensive plays was turned in by freshman, Ricky Wolff. Late in the fourth quarter, Steven Bosma hit Ryker Van Belle in the flat where the initial tackle was missed. Van Belle followed blockers down the sideline in front of the Cougar bench, looking to take it all the way. But Wolff used his speed to get ahead of the play and fought off a blocker, turning Van Belle inside where pursuit closed in. Wolff continued to fight off two blockers to get a piece of the tackle on the 50 yard pass play.
In the end, Sunnyside Christian couldn't stop the power and speed of the Cougars, but they played a good game over the final three quarters and showed they can be a passing threat with two huge receivers, basketball players Steven Broersma and Kevin DeJong. Bosma was 8-21 for 175 yards and had 20 carries for 63 yards.
During halftime, the homecoming court was presented and Ellie Casey was crowned queen and Jorge Gutierrez king.
Next up for Lyle-Wishram is a non-league game at North Powder.
Wolves come alive in second half

Last Friday was a good night to be a Timberwolf running back, and the guy under center didn't do too badly, either. After letting the Mabton Vikings take an early 6-0 lead, the Timberwolves rode Torey Spaulding-Jimenez for 166 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the way to a 55-13 romp. Spaulding-Jimenez scored three times in the first half on runs of 10, 2, and 16 yards.
With the game too close for comfort at the half, the Timberwolves put the game out of reach, scoring three times in the third quarter, including a 10 yard touchdown by Anthony Dobson on a Tyrell Cronin pass. Cronin would finish the game 7-14 for 196 yards. His main target, J.D. Moss caught four passes for 74 yards.
Five other running backs saw action for Goldendale, led by Justin Garrigus who picked up 80 yards and scored on runs of 3 and 30 yards. Garrigus is averaging 10.6 yards per carry on the year. Seth Davis rushed for 40 yards, Braydon Ross picked up 19 and scored 13 points on a touchdown and six extra point kicks, Kurt Wilkins gained 14 yards, and JimJack Davenport had 11. It was also a big night for Mabton's running back Noe Gutierrez, who gained 151 yards.
The Timberwolves take on the Cle Elum Warriors this Friday. Cle Elum is a bit of a mystery. Will the Warriors show up as the team that beat Wahluke 39-7, or the team that was shut out by River View 36-0? Game time is 7 p.m. at Barthlow Field, in Goldendale.
Wolves suffer unusual league loss to Granger

Goldendale volleyball kicked off their home opener Thursday night hosting the Granger Spartans in what would be a less than perfect night for the Lady Timberwolves. The Spartans won in three straight sets, which is only the third loss for Goldendale in SCAC play since early in 2006.
Game one was close until the end, as they were tied 16-16, but Granger surged forward with a close 25-20 victory. Game two was all Granger as Goldendale could not keep it in bounds and lost the game on a convincing score of 25-13. Game three was more intense as the game went to a tie at 20-20 then 24-24 as Goldendale kept pace with the Spartans; but Granger ground out a 26-24 victory as Goldendale couldn't score in the final points. Alex Counts led the Wolves with eight digs, and Haley Hoffman had 14 assists.
The loss evened the Timberwolves' record in SCAC west play, as they dominated Mabton 25-20, 25-11, 25-18, earlier in the week. Lexi Cameron had seven kills, Haley Hoffman had 16 assists and Monique Scherf pulled out 11 digs.
Goldendale will face another league contender when they travel to Cle Elum on Thursday. The next home match will be another test against Zillah on Tuesday.
