Cougars and Lady Timberwolves capture Klickitat Jamboree honors

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

For the second year in a row, Goldendale's boys let a Klickitat Jamboree game go to the Lyle-Wishram Cougars, this time with an unlikely half-court shot by Jeremy LeMarr. The Cougars also defeated Klickitat 15-9 to claim title to the boys' side of the Jamboree.
The Jamboree was the first action for county teams. The format was a round-robin of 10 minute games, giving the teams some action against another team after a couple of weeks of practice.
The win over Goldendale capped a comeback from a lackluster Cougar start.      Goldendale jumped out to a 10-0 lead as the Cougars searched for their offense. The comeback was triggered by the strength of Henry Matai on the offensive boards and the energy and drives of Keale Wiseman.      Wiseman got Kyle Murphy involved in the offense and the Cougar forward had back-to-back buckets to close to 16-14 with 1:33 left. Nolan Smith tied the game with 8 seconds left, setting up LeMarr's game winner for the 19-16 final.
Goldendale's girls, who also felt the sting of a long shot against Ki-Be on Saturday, swept the girls' side of the Klickitat Jamboree with wins over Lyle-Wishram, 13-5, and Klickitat, 19-12.
Klickitat entered the title game with a 1-0 record after defeating Lyle-Wishram 13-4 in the Jamboree's opening game. Tia Spino ran a solid attack that featured dominant inside play by Zoe Lindner and Samantha Brewer. The Cougars were particularly rusty, falling behind 13-0 before finally scoring with 1:03 left on a Chantelle Hickman bucket. The final points were put in by Brianna Brock.
With the Timberwolves notching a similar win over the Cougars, Klickitat and Goldendale met to decide who would finish 2-0. The Timberwolves played a tight defensive game, keeping Brewer and Lindner away from the hoop with defensive play from Sadie Shattuck and Alex Counts. Lexi Cameron controlled the game from her point guard position and the Timberwolves won 19-12.
Goldendale's boys had a tough night with buzzer beaters. After the loss to Lyle-Wishram, the Timberwolves went to work on the Vandals. Reed Lindhe started strong, hitting his first three shots accompanied by a three and two-point shot from Kaden Milliren to go up 11-5. Chase Wing stole the ball and scored before leaving the game with an ankle injury and the Wolves up 13-5.
Klickitat chipped away at the lead when Caleb Keys put back a rebound and Matthew Kessinger hit a three to make it 13-10 with 5:30 left. Neither team scored over the next three minutes until Keys broke the ice for two.
Action was hectic from end to end. With time running down, Keys blocked a Lindhe shot and missed a shot at the Vandal end. Kessinger got the rebound but his shot didn't drop and the Wolves pushed the action with Milliren scoring to make it 15-12. Keys tried to tie with a three that was off mark, but the Vandals got the ball back on a Dion Curtis steal. Seth Davis couldn't find the hoop from the corner, but Keys had another steal and outlet to Kessinger who drained a 22 foot shot at the buzzer. The game ended with the 15-15 tie.
Klickitat plays non-conference games through December with first conference action on Jan. 8, at TLG.
Lyle-Wishram won't have a league game until Jan. 22, against Riverside Christian.
Goldendale will have played six games against SCAC east teams before their first league game on Dec. 18, at Mabton.

Timberwolves off to 2-0 start

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Goldendale's boys jumped to 2-0 on the young basketball season with wins over River View and Ki-Be last week.
The Timberwolves trailed 41-33 at the end of three quarters, but came back to beat River View 50-47 on Friday in Kennewick. Reed Lindhe had a game high 19 points, with nine coming in the final quarter plus four key rebounds. River View tried to stay in the game with a barrage from beyond the three-point line, but they missed all eight attempts. Zane MacRae had eight points and eight rebounds. MacRae scored four points on 4-6 shooting from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, but overall free throw shooting for the team was erratic and kept the game closer than it could have been. Goldendale was just 10-21 from the line in the second half. River View was 3-7.
It looked like Saturday's Ki-Be game in Goldendale might be a competitive affair during the first quarter. But Goldendale ran off with the game in a 19-6 second quarter and held the Bears to single digit scoring in each quarter on the way to a 62-29 blowout. Kaden Milliren came up big in the early going and scored 17 points. MacRae was also in double digits with 13.
Goldendale showed the key to their strength, as nine players contributed to the scoring. Sophomore guard, Devon Casey dazzled the crowd in the second half with slick ball handling, driving the lane and assisting on several scores. Casey finished with six points.
It was a different story for the Lady Timberwolves, who had a tough loss at River View and a stunner against Ki-Be. The ladies played the Panthers evenly throughout the game, leading 29-22 at the half and 42-39 at the end of three quarters. But a four point fourth quarter handed the game to River View, 52-46. The loss overshadowed a great game from Alex Counts, who scored 25 points including 7-8 shooting in the first half. River View out-rebounded the Wolves 13-8 in the final quarter and Goldendale only managed to take six shots in the quarter.
The Ki-Be game seemed headed for overtime when freshman Bailey Schroeder launched a toss, more than a shot, but it hit it's mark for a 48-45 Bear victory. Tate Bailey led the Wolves with 18 points.

Wilkins pins two at crossover dual

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Goldendale took on wrestlers from Warden and Kiona-Benton last week to begin a series of cross-over matches against SCAC east competition. The Timberwolves found the going tough against Warden with two wins, six losses and six forfeits. Goldendale had nobody at 103 through 135 pounds, but Torey Spaulding-Jimenez put points on the board for the Timberwolves with a 10-8, overtime win over Scott Henderson at 140.
A string of losses was stopped at 215 when Kurt Wilkins pinned Hugh Rodriguez with 23 seconds left in the second round. The Wolves were competitive, but showed their inexperience in the losses.      Wade Gaston showed incredible strength and energy, bridging and flipping out of potential pins five times before losing a superior decision to Sam Suarez at 145. Austin Jones had too much strength for Carmelo DeLeon at 152, but a bloody nose during the frenzied action created problems for the sophomore. With breathing hampered from the plugged nose and a mouth piece for braces, Jones tired in the second round and was pinned with one second left.
Nolin Bare showed good skills and strength at 160, leading 7-4 after one round. Bare tied the match with a reversal to make it 9-9 in the third round, but his opponent, Kenny Sullivan escaped and got in on a leg for a take down and 12-9 win.
Marcos Sanchez couldn't keep up with the speed of his opponent and was pinned at 171 pounds. Billy Monroe lost at 189, 9-4 and Jessica Carr saw her first action against David Martinez, as Warden had only boys in her weight division. Carr was pinned with 1:44 left in the first round.
Ki-Be proved to be a better match-up for Goldendale, although Gaston and Jones fell to first round pins to open the match.
Bare got Goldendale close with a second round pin against Clay Wilcox at 2:54 in the match. Sanchez was a first round pin victim, but Monroe stormed back to dominate Chris Howell and notched a pin at 3:28.
Wilkins tied the match with a quick, 25 second pin over Luis Beltran, but the forfeits lay ahead. Carr fought off a charge from Corey Brumbaugh, but was taken to the mat and pinned at 25 seconds.
Ki-Be won the next six matches via forfeit before Spaulding-Jimenez stepped up for his second match. The Goldendale wrestler proved to be too quick, scoring take downs at will and won the match at 3:10 with a pin.
