Almost everyone was cold in the unheated gym at White Salmon last week, at the beginning of the annual Holiday Tournament among host Columbia, Goldendale, Lyle-Wishram, and Stevenson. One person was hot.
The Timberwolves' Tate Bailey was on a 90 point pace, hitting 4-4 on two point shots and 3-3 on threes before taking the rest of the game off, six minutes into the first quarter against Stevenson. The only other points scored in the first quarter were by Lexi Cameron as Goldendale led 19-0. It was 31-4 at the half and Goldendale cleared the bench. By the time the heat came on, Goldendale had coasted to a 50-21 victory.
The boys' game was a better match of talent, won by Stevenson 62-58. After an even first quarter, Stevenson became more interested in the officiating than the game and the Timberwolves opened up an 11 point lead at the half.
The Bulldogs regained their focus in the second half when the Timberwolves shot 3-13 in the third quarter and began to accumulate fouls. Chase Wing was hot in the fourth quarter, but the Wolves shifted their offense outside and missed eight of nine three-point shots. Nick Gavenas and Kyle Cosentino led the charge for Stevenson scoring six and 12 fourth quarter points, respectively. Cosentino harassed Goldendale guards and ended a Timberwolf comeback with a steal and two points from the foul line with seconds left. Three Timberwolves fouled out of the game.
The evening games pitted Lyle-Wishram against Columbia-White Salmon. The Lady Cougars found plenty of opportunity for easy baskets inside the Bruins' porous defense, and kept the outcome in doubt for the entire game. However, the inside game dried up when the Cougars couldn't get the ball past a tightened Columbia perimeter defense and the Bruins won 46-39.
Treane Wells had a great game, scoring eight of her 13 points in the final quarter and pulled down nine rebounds in the second half. Karlee Roth provide mid-range scoring with 4-6 shooting in the second half for a game high 14 points. But the Bruins had three girls in double digits. Laurel Huth created opportunities with slashing drives to the hoop allowing Aleigha Rude to collect many of her 12 points off offensive rebounds. Adrianne DeLay and Taryn Struck each scored 11 points.
A pressing defense and a lot of turnovers characterized the first half of the boys game which was even at the half, thanks to three-point shots by Columbia's Mark Lovrin. But the Cougars were destined to win 70-58, as Kyle Murphy and Henry Matai took control of the game in the second half. The pair crashed the boards and led a 25-11 rebounding edge for the second half. Murphy pulled down seven boards in the third quarter and kicked in a blocked shot as Matai shot 4-5 for 11 third quarter points. Matai continued to score in the final quarter, a perfect 3-3 plus one foul shot and four rebounds. Murphy scored on power drives from the top of the key and Allen Matai harassed the Bruins with four second half steals. Henry Matai and Murphy each scored 22 points in the game. Lovrin led the Bruins with 22 points, but his three point shots lost their accuracy as he moved further and further beyond the arc as the game wound down and he drained just two of seven in the second half.
Keys leads Vandals in split at Helix
Caleb Keys averaged nearly 20 points per game, but it was only good enough for a split by the Klickitat Vandals at the Helix Tournament, last week.
Matthew Kessinger and Christian Schlangen each had five assists in the Vandals' 34-15 win over Griswold in the opening game. Kessinger and Wade Ramsey scored nine points each and Schlangen pulled down 14 rebounds while Keys had 15.
Although the first game was a win, Klickitat Coach Joe Bales was more pleased with the effort during the 59-35 pounding the Vandals received at the hands of Waitsburg-Prescott. It was purely a case of being out-manned, as six Vandals tried to overcome a pressing defense from start to final buzzer. Twelve Cardinals scored. "They came at us in waves," said Bales. Kessinger scored nine points again and led Klickitat with 10 rebounds. Turnovers helped Waitsburg-Prescott open a 25-12 half-time lead and they never looked back.
The Lady Vandals had a rough start, losing 53-30 to Griswold. Samantha Brewer had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, but the Grizzlies pitched a 15-0 shutout in the third quarter and had three girls score in double digits.
Wednesday's game went to Powder Valley 58-55. Klickitat stayed close after falling behind by five in the first quarter as Brewer and Zoe Lindner scored double, doubles. Brewer scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds, while Lindner had 10 points and 10 boards. Two other Vandals scored in double digits. Charise McConville had 15 and Tia Spino scored 13.
Next up for the Vandals is an important showdown with TLG at Trout Lake on Jan. 8. Klickitat will host Yakama Tribal and Bickleton will host TLG on Jan. 9, as the battle for a top two finish in the Columbia Gorge League begins. |
