Three individual wins for Averie Morgan at Moses Lake

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

The Goldendale High School equestrian team completed the second leg of three district competitions, last weekend in Moses Lake. Averie Morgan scored a triple win in working rancher, stock seat and dressage. Morgan received a fourth first place medal as part of the drill team with Elizabeth Matula, Holli Mansfield, and Amber Mercer.
The team of Alyson Mello and Jessica Kaseberg won the team sorting event and Kaseberg had an individual win in breakaway roping.
Other members of the team are Heather Ault, Makiah Steen, Lauren Hoodenpyl and Marie Haensel. Hoodenpyl is from Trout Lake. Haensel is a German foreign exchange student from Sherman County. Kaseberg is also from Sherman County.
Equitation is classified as an activity sanctioned by Goldendale High School. The team is coached by Gabi Bradley, Robin Hudson and Tracey King. Competition is in three, areas: pattern classes, timed classes, and team classes. Point totals for events are totaled for the three district events to determine eligibility for the State meet. The number of qualifiers for state is 10 percent of the average number of individuals or teams competing at the district events. Individuals can compete in up to five events plus any team events that qualify.
Many of the events are straight-forward and familiar to most people who have attended horsemanship events. There are also some more unusual events such as birangle, in-hand and Canadian flags.
Birangle is a two-person relay with each rider rounding a set of poles 30 feet apart, 120 feet from the start/finish line.
In-hand obstacle relay is a four member relay event where each handler leads her horse through an obstacle course.
Canadian flags is a four-member relay with each rider, in turn, riding approximately 100 feet to a line of flags. The first rider grabs the furthest flag and returns, sending off the second, then third and fourth rider racing back with the nearest flag.

Keffeler, Wilson and Churchwell on winning track

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

New personal records gained first place finishes at tough meets for Andrea Keffeler, of Goldendale and Christina Wilson, of Bickleton, while Teaera Churchwell had a season best in the 800 meters to bring home the only win for Lyle-Wishram as weekend track and field meets scattered schools from Royal City to Walla Walla and beyond.
Keffeler was the only Timberwolf winner at the Ron Vanderholm Invitational at Royal City. The sophomore jumped 31-4 in the triple jump for the win. She also set a PR in the long jump at 14-11.5, good enough for third place.
Wilson ran a 6:30.08 in the 1600 at Walla Walla on Friday for Bickleton’s only win for the girls. It was her first win of the year and only her second start at that distance.
Churchwell’s win in 2:34.34 was four seconds ahead of the runner up, but still about four seconds off her best time in the 800, set last year. She also had third place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters, and was fifth in the long jump.

Wolves undefeated as league play approaches

Andrew Christiansen
Reporter

Goldendale’s baseball team kept their undefeated record intact last week with a non-conference game against Riverside of Boardman, won by the Wolves 14-2. J.D. Moss wrecked the game for the Pirates with his base-running in the second inning and hitting in the third.
Matt Hyder, pitching with the bases loaded and no outs in the second inning, became overly concerned with Moss’s lead at first base. Hyder whirled and threw to first, but the first baseman was not covering. Reed Lindhe ran home from third base and an alert Blake Lesko hoofed it all the way from second, eluding the tag from an empty catcher’s glove. The score was 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Moss smacked a two-run single that finished the game for Hyder. Evan Keefer, in relief, had no answers for the Goldendale hitters allowing Moss to score as he gave up five more runs in the five inning game.
Also perfect at the plate for the Timberwolves, in addition to Moss, were Cody Herin (3-3, three runs scored and two RBI), and Lesko (2-2, two runs scored). Aaron Cochran was 2-3 with three RBI. Trevor Fields gained the win, his third on the season, with a two-hit performance, striking out five and walking one. Lindhe pitched the final inning, retiring the Pirates in order, striking out two.
The early Timberwolf success and losses by Naches Valley have Goldendale ranked second in the early polls. The first real tests for the team will come when the team plays Zillah, Cle Elum and Naches Valley in succession from April 20-27. Next up this week is another non-conference game at Wapato followed by the league opener in Goldendale against Highland on April 17, starting at 11 a.m.
